* Percy imagining himself, Annabeth, and Grover growing old and spending their twilight years in peace during his fight against Geras. It's mostly heartwarming, except for the fact that he got the idea from his buddy Jason, who once told him that he had a dream of himself and Piper as grandparents, telling their grandkids about their exploits with Gaea, and it suddenly becomes heartbreaking since we all know what will happen to them in the near future.

So when Percy finds Nico, he's desperate to protect him in order to fulfill Bianca's last wish not only out of a sense of duty but also of guilt.
* After Percy celebrates his birthday with his mom, he finds Nico outside his window on the fire-escape and notes that when Nico looked at his cake, he wondered whether or not Nico had a lot of birthday's as a kid.

** While her anger- induced behavior towards Rachel is pretty hurtful, if you dip deeper, there's a lot of sadness behind it in regards to her and Percy: It's pretty clear howe much she loves Percy (This is after she kisses him in Mount St. Helens) and despite Percy having a good, important reason to bring Rachel along, she believes that he likes Rachel and that while she's in the picture, her romantic path to Percy is now blocked. (What makes this hurt more is that Rachel had already deduced that Annabeth loved Percy and had zero intention of standing in their way; which is why she briefly chides Percy for not seeing Annabeth's feelings for him as quickly as Rachel did.)

* Thalia's fate. Here is a 12 year old girl who ran away from home, met two friends and survived despite huge odds against her, then after a guardian satyr finds them, they head for the camp. They are followed by literally every monster Hades can send after them including all three Furies. They make it to the hill on the edge of camp, but are wounded. Thalia stops there, turns around and tells the satry to take her two friends to safety while she keeps the monsters at bay. Having no choice, the satyr does as told, and Thalia dies sacrificing herself. Her father, Zeus, finally takes pity on her and turns her into a pine tree strengthening the boundary around the camp.

* Annabeth's family situation. His father met Athena while working on his doctorate at Harvard, then one day got a golden crib with Baby Annabeth inside. He didn't plan a kid, it threw his plans totally out of whack, and she knows it. He married a normal woman, having two kids who are normal, which is described by Annabeth as him forgetting and turning his back on Athena. Then after a few years, monsters started sensing her. The family fought a lot and everyone was accusing towards Annabeth and saw her as the reason for the troubles... so she decided her father chose and she does not fit into his new life and ran away. She was ''seven'' when she did, meaning that the attacks probably started when she was six or even five. And if she hadn't met Thalia and Luke, she would have ''died'', a fact she is more than aware of. And the kicker? A year or two later she did try to patch things up and go back for the school year. The monsters attacked again and the fights got bad enough she asked Chiron to take her back before the Christmas holidays.

** But the other kicker is how Percy takes this revelation. He looked up to Luke as a sort of BigBrotherMentor he never had, teaching him sword-fighting and gave him winged shoes for his journey. But then he learns that Luke was the "friend who would betray him" in his prophecy all along. He plotted with Ares to start the war among the gods, framed Percy for the crime even when he wasn't aware of his demigod nature, and then cursed the winged shoes to pull Percy into Tartarus, along with the Master Bolt (only for Percy to hand the shoes off the Grover). Luke basically had no qualms ending Percy's life and proved it by poisoning him with Pit Scorpion venom. While Percy was lucky to have survived, he took Luke's betrayal ''[[ItsPersonal very]]'' [[ItsPersonal personally]] from then on, considering how his actions got his loved ones hurt and he almost lost his mother.

** it doesn't stop there; with his final breaths, Luke pleads to Percy that he finishes his work, in that he will ensure that no more children of the Gods, Big three or otherwise, will be either killed or unclaimed; adding so much emotionality to Luke's true reason for joining Kronos; he couldn't stand watching the gods kill off their children to save their hides or sending monsters to kill them; Part of his reason for wanting to destroy them was to permanently punish them for what he considered an unforgiveable sin.

*Annabeth has several tear worthy moments in the series; which include:
**Her extreme nervousness over leading her own quest, which gets to her so bad that it takes an embrace from Percy to calm her down.
**She is reticent to reveal the final line of her prophecy, because she's afraid that saying it aloud will make it come true. (The line being that she will "Lose a love to worse than death")
**The way she kisses Percy before he attacks the monsters in Hephaestus's workshop in Mount St. Helens; knowing that he may die, and she knows she really likes him romantically.
** Percy sees his funeral at Camp Half Blood after leaving Calypso's Island, and finds Annabeth in tears throughout it before he reveals himself.

* Percy gets a sad moment when Luke, after learning that they don't have the fleece, bluntly tells him that no matter what he and his friends did to stop them, he'll never stop Kronos' rebirth. This is rather sad for Percy, as Luke basically tells him that no matter what he does, the Titan Lord's rising will happen.
*It's hard to not shed a tear for Annabeth when we learn of her deepest desire after successfully evading the sirens; her deepest desire is that she gets her mother, Athena, back together with her father; Luke abandons Kronos and goes back to her as well, and they all live happily together in a city that she designed and built. making things sadder is her quiet realization that her dream is just a dream, and will never come true in real life.

Added DiffLines:

* On top of that in regards to sad moments for Percy; Thalia joining the hunters and never turning sixteen all but spells out that Percy is going to be the big three child referenced in the great prophecy; though Thalia tries to cheer him up by saying he deserves it as he's a true hero. What's more, while he still has her as a friend, he doesn't see her until "The Last Olympian".

** Heroes of Olympus adds an extra layer of tragedy to it with what happened before that: Jason. Thalia's brother and the only reason she stuck around, was basically sold by Zeus to Hera to calm her down at least a bit, and when Hera took him away, Thalia saw no reason to stay anymore.
