** Which leads up to the thought that... we do not know anything about Diego's backstory beyond that. Johnny claims he was not a good person, but [[UnreliableNarrator Johnny himself was not only very jealous of Diego, it all came from hearsay]]. Plus when we see the two interact Diego himself seems pretty nice beyond the competition, despite Johnny disliking his presence. While we are predisposed to see him as just FauxAffablyEvil thanks to Dio, there is no proof of so, and it would actually go against his mother's teachings in his backstory. It is very likely he was a perfectly nice guy that Johnny hated just because of his talent... before [[TheCorruption being infected by Scary Monsters and having it become his own stand]], that is.

* Johnny's past regarding the death of his older brother Nicolas; he never stopped blaming himself for it where it's most likely not even his fault, and how his father blatantly favored Nicolas over Johnny, years after his brother's death. The latter is made all the more heartbreaking when it's clear that Johnny desperately wanted his father's affection.

* Ringo's backstory and death. He was a malnourished child who was in constant pain, his father dying in capacity, and lost his family to a man intended to rape him- leading to him awakening his power to have greater resolve. He then dies after a lengthy battle to inspire Gyro to accept the resolve to a man willing to kill in cold blood to get his objectives achieved.
* Hot Pants' backstory. When she was young, she and her younger brother were out hunting for nuts, they were attacked by a grizzly bear and cornered into a crevasse. In desperation, she would sacrifice her brother in order to survive, [[SurvivorsGuilt leading to her feeling intense guilt for her moment of weakness]]. And she would relive the trauma via Civil War's power.
* Wekapipo's backstory. He had a loving sister and had assumed she was living happily with her husband, but in reality, the brother in law was abusive to her. When he found about this, he would pull some strings to annul the marriage. Enraged, the former brother in law would arrange a duel between Wekapipo and himself, leading the latter's death. Wekapipo would then be arranged for exile under the pretense that he was dead to protect the reputation of the family. While in the United States, he found out that his sister apparently had died from falling down a flight of stairs, leading to the man losing all hope to become a ruthless assassin under Funny Valentine.

* While he had become unsympathetic due to planning to use the Holy Corpse to make his own country safe at the expense of the rest of the world and had mocked Gyro's death, Funny Valentine is tragic as he didn't start off evil from birth, and in fact, [[UsedToBeASweetKid used to be a carefree boy]]. He learned that his father died to protect the nation, inspiring him to do the same, with himself being tortured for the sake of the country's stability. He then found a piece of the Holy Corpse that awoke his Stand. His first actions was to attempt to bring back his father, but every time proved futile as it always ended in his death even in alternative timelines. His next best option was to secure the safety of the country that his father died to protect, even if the methods were morally bankrupt.
** Even Johnny the man who killed him [[WhatASenselessWasteOfHumanLife felt regret making the kill after see his suspicions confirmed the President chose to go back on his word after a convincing speech on being integral in order to continue the desire to protect the country to the point he would later entrust it to a worse version of Diego to fulfill the stability of the country he cherished. And that he, a president of great charisma and resolved died in an isolated area with no body or grave to mark his passing]].

** There's one final gut punch right before the end: Marco, the boy that Zeppelli so desperately wanted to save from an unjust execution, manages to out last the Kingdom of Naples, but dies shortly after of a cold of all things. ** This leads to an even ''more'' heartbreaking moment in ''High Voltage Part 2'' where George comes to the final leg of the Steel Ball run clutching Johnny's boots to see his son disembark the ship with tears in his eyes, forcing his way in front of the crowd to make sure his son sees him and sees that he's there to cheer him on. Even Johnny's tearful at seeing his father come to make amends. Then George speaks up with the cherry on the heartbreak cake.
--->'''George:''' Everyone. Everyone, please! Please listen to me. Please just for a bit, please listen to what I have to say. [[HeelRealization I've come here because I've treated my own child horribly for years and years.]] And the whole time up until now, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone I never realized that cruelty. I know that apologizing isn't enough to make up for scarring my child's heart.]] But that... is something I finally now have come to realize. My child's name is "Johnny Joestar". [[SoProudOfYou He crossed from the far-off west coast all the way across the continent. All by himself. And now! Here! He's finally made it to New York...]] (breaks down crying)
** What's more, the crowd seems to be icy faced to him pouring his heart out in support of his son, but then the reader is shown a little girl who starts clapping with tears in her eyes and further panels show the ''whole crowd'' is teary-eyed as they begin clapping at George's speech and in support of Johnny. Support he'd dearly need in his final battle against the alternate Diego.
