* Johnny's past regarding the death of his older brother Nicolas; he never stopped blaming himself for it where it's most likely not even his fault, and how his father blatantly favored Nicolas over Johnny, years after his brother's death. The latter is made all the more heartbreaking when it's clear that Johnny desperately wanted his father's affection.

* Diego's backstory, which includes his own mother basically killing herself to make sure he gets fed.

* Ringo's backstory and death. He was a malnourished child who was in constant pain, his father dying in capacity, and lost his family to a man intended to rape him- leading to him awakening his power to have greater resolve. He then dies after a lengthy battle to inspire Gyro to accept the resolve to a man willing to kill in cold blood to get his objectives achieved.
* Hot Pants' backstory. When she was young, she and her younger brother were out hunting for nuts, they were attacked by a grizzly bear and cornered into a crevasse. In desperation, she would sacrifice her brother in order to survive, [[SurvivorsGuilt leading to her feeling intense guilt for her moment of weakness]]. And she would relive the trauma via Civil War's power.
* Wekapipo's backstory. He had a loving sister and had assumed she was living happily with her husband, but in reality, the brother in law was abusive to her. When he found about this, he would pull some strings to annul the marriage. Enraged, the former brother in law would arrange a duel between Wekapipo and himself, leading the latter's death. Wekapipo would then be arranged for exile under the pretense that he was dead to protect the reputation of the family. While in the United States, he found out that his sister apparently had died from falling down a flight of stairs, leading to the man losing all hope to become a ruthless assassin under Funny Valentine.

** After killing Funny Valentine, he sees his ghost and the latter gives his farewells. This is followed a by several-page spread of their memories of building a strong bond.

** There's one final gut punch right before the end: Marco, the boy that Zeppelli so desperately wanted to save from an unjust execution, manages to out last the Kingdom of Naples, but dies shortly after of a cold of all things. Zeppelli's family, who'd served the King, had to disappear as Naples was absorbed into Italy proper. Everything that Gyro fought for wound up withering away right after he died.
* In a way, the conclusion to the story of The Saint is this - starting with the man who makes the map (which makes Steel Ball Run possible to begin with), everyone he met on his journey east around the world - even when he makes it to America and continues his pilgrimage across a then uncharted continet - everyone he ever helped ultimatly parted with him with the same words: Will we ever meet again?
