** In "[[Recap/StarTrekVoyagerS7E3Drive Drive]]", the spirit of this is invoked when ''Voyager'' signs up for the Antarian Trans-Stellar Rally, a race between various alien races being held to celebrate the end of a long-standing period of hostilities. When the race organiser observes that he's having trouble choosing a vessel to host the pre-race celebrations as the long tensions between the various species means that any concession to one race can be seen as an insult to another, Captain Janeway volunteers for ''Voyager'' to be the hosting vessel, as they're completely new to the area and so have no ties to any previous side that might cause offence.
** In "[[Recap/StarTrekVoyagerS7E18AuthorAuthor Author, Author]]", Neelix tries to invoke this when giving advice to the Doctor about the conflict of the episode (the Doctor has written a holonovel about holograms facing prosecution but the crew are offended as he basically used their likenesses in the narrative), mentioning a Talaxian saying that went "When the road before you splits in two, take the third path", encouraging the Doctor to request time to make some rewrites and change the fine details so that the characters won't resemble his shipmates.

** One episode with a focus on backstory shows how House got his leg in the shape it is: an aneurysm in his thigh caused the muscles in his leg to become necrotic. An amputation would save his life, but House stubbornly refused to have his leg removed, even though he was in agony after the initial procedure to remove the clot. His boss, Lisa Cuddy, and his girlfriend at the time and medical proxy, Stacey Warner, took a third option: an operation that would only remove the necrotic tissue and restore blood flow to his thigh. Arguably, it backfired, as he ended up with the worst of both worlds -- a permanent disability ''and'' chronic pain.

** In "Shibboleth", a cargo container full of Christian refugees from China arrives in San Diego, and President Bartlet is faced with a choice between offering them asylum or sending them back to China. If he offers them asylum, he risks offending China (which claims that Christians are not persecuted), putting several trade deals at risk and increasing tensions. If he sends them back, he's sending them straight back to Chinese persecution and will get pilloried by the Christian right and anti-Chinese lobby. In the end, he chooses to order the guards posted at the immigration facility where they're being housed to stand down, allowing the refugees to escape; that way, the refugees can build a new life in America and China gets to save face by mocking the "inadequacies" of the American authorities.

* ''Series/SideHustle'': The episode "Altoonisburg Al" has the trio attend the "Possum Day" celebration where the eponymous possum is to predict the length of summer vacation. Lex votes for the latter option because her birthday is around the time school generally starts and wants to celebrate it with her classmates. After the possum escapes until lured back by Munchy's possum juice recipe, it has drank so much that it ends up choosing neither option, so the mayor decides to call it even and levels it down to three more weeks of vacation so Lex can have her birthday as she hoped.
