** A common (but certainly not funny) joke on Website/{{Twitter}} is that most indies are ''VideoGame/EarthBound1994''-inspired [=RPG=]s about depression, specifically ''VideoGame/{{Undertale}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Omori}}''.

Sometimes, even other big franchises that had a following in American/PAL regions like ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Contra}}'' are often less remembered than those two (even if the 2015/2016 controversies also affected them).

** What video game series does Creator/{{Sega}} produce these days? A lot of people don't know besides ''Sonic''. Some people will answer ''VideoGame/{{Yakuza}}'', ''VideoGame/PuyoPuyo'', or ''VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall''. The rest is an enigma.

* For landmark puzzle video games, ''VideoGame/{{Tetris}}'' will always be the go-to reference point, and sometimes ''VideoGame/DrMario'' or ''VideoGame/PuzzleLeague'' will be mentioned.

** Rhythm games with plots are usually not on the radar, however if they are referenced it's probably ''VideoGame/ParappaTheRapper'' considering how [[WidgetSeries it is]].
