Not sure why this was here TWICE but since one of this is the trope and the other is just a baldy written rant… I added some context from a missed trope entry on the YMMV page.

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: ALL . LITERALLY EVERYONE . All the main characters already are or end up becoming horrible and morally repulsive people , casually performing disgusting acts , laughing about it and everyone around them still keeps claiming that they deserve happiness and redemption or even already got it . It gets so ridiculous that even the ( few ) genuinely good and decent people in the cast keep claiming that none of them should suffer consequences for their past sins ( almost as if they were desperately trying to convince the show's audience ) . Imagine living in a world filled with unrepentant mass murderers who pathetically try to justify all of their atrocities to the people around them... and after listening to their lame excuses, "normal" people actually go over to their side. horrible. Seriously. EVERYONE! Basically everyone in this universe claims is claiming: They/They have been through hardships in life and you have no right to judge them for their evil actions, no matter how ridiculously petty and psychotic their actions whatever, you can never get any justice and must be content with that. That goes for ALL characters who played any level of importance in this series and its spin-offs!

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: How you’re meant to feel about moral decisions is based entirely on who’s doing it. A Hunter looking to kill Elena? A horrible act of bigotry. Elena getting her brother to effectively commit mass murder on tens of thousands of vampires? Just something that needs to be done. Essentially everything is always okay if the main characters are helping each other and bad if it’s someone doing something that impacts the main characters.

* RaceLift: Bonnie in the books was a redhead of Scottish descent, but is African American in the show.

Added DiffLines:

* AbortedArc: The mystery set up at the start of season five around Elena and Caroline's roommate Megan, who has drinks laced with vervain, a connection to Aaron, knew Elena's father and is killed by a vampire offscreen, is never really resolved, with everyone just forgetting to care about her after about five episodes. There's eventually a {{Handwave}} that [[spoiler: Enzo killed her after she found him locked up and Gregory cured her of a head defect with vampire blood]], but that doesn't fit in with either the set-up (where Megan was chased and thrown out of an upper storey window, not killed in the basement) or references to an "Augustine vampire" (who are supposed to be vampires that feed on other vampires).

Added DiffLines:

** For much of the first season or two, daylight rings are treated as something extremely rare, with Damon and Stefan initially unaware that anyone else has them. Within a few seasons, pretty much every vampire has one, making the fact that Lexi never had one really stand out when she appears in flashbacks.

Added DiffLines:

** Season 6 features a lengthy thread about how, in order for the Gemini coven to get a new mystical leader, either Luke and Liv will have to merge, which will kill one of them, or Jo will have to face Kai and probably lose, which the gang try to train her for. Luke attempts to TakeAThirdOption [[spoiler: by facing Kai himself, leaving Kai triumphant. At the end of the season, Kai kills all the Gemini coven, including Jo and Liv.]]

* InNameOnly: The show is ''very'' loosely based on the book series by L.J. Smith; aside from the basic premise of a human teenage girl caught in a dangerous love triangle between two vampire brothers, the plots of the show and books differ greatly. Many of the characters also only superfically resemble their book counterparts beyond sharing the same names, especially as the series goes on.
