The Ancient Ones is a Roleplay series (currently with two roleplays) on the Portal To The Multiverse forums of Website/NationStates, and was created by [[http://www.nationstates.net/nation=the_dark_brotherhood_of_deros the Dark Brotherhood of Deros]]. It is co-led by [[http://www.nationstates.net/nation=naval_monte Naval Monte]], [[http://www.nationstates.net/nation=mundeo Mundeo]], and [[http://www.nationstates.net/nation=petrokovia Petrokovia]]. It has its own [[http://the-ancient-ones.wikia.com/wiki/The_Ancient_Ones_Wikia wikia]], with several entries maintained by the various Roleplayers taking part.

The Ancient Ones takes place in the multiverse, where four original races once resided. The main group, the Ancient Ones, has built walls to separate the infinite universes from each other, in order to keep stability. The premise, which is that the walls had fallen (leading to various established and original characters to interact with each other), was a part of an earlier RP created by Deros called The Walls Have Fallen.
The A-Plot of the first RP involves the heroes battling against a crazed Ancient One named Infinity, and the A-Plot of the second RP involves a large-scale war against the Borg (related to a strange, secretive, antagonistic association), but there are many sub-arcs that tie into the main plot.

Franchises prominently featured in the Ancient Ones include Undertale, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Doctor Who, and many, many others, including several very extensively laid out original Verses.

In fact they often try to maintain order in the paranormal world in their universe.

** Marguerite also has a cool sword (modelled after a WWI French Infantry saber), with various magical properties, including indestructibility, perfect sharpness, and more.

Tadayoshi's preparedness gives Batman a run for his money; Too bad most of his equipment doesn't serve much combat purpose.

** Elizabeth wears dark clothing, practices what can be best describes as dark magic, has a roguish personality and looks and as made deals with what can be best described as the offsprings of Satan and Cthulhu. But she is a anti hero who secretly wants to do good in the world even though she will never say it openly.
** Dark Pit fits this trope.

** Ty and Gold's other pokemon frequent this trope, as their eyes glow blue or white when they use detect (some other moves also have their eyes glow in response, such as psychic).
** Amplificatae (such as Agent A or Tadayoshi) have bioluminescent cells in their irises, giving them the ability to make their eyes glow (specifically, just their irises, which may be more intimidating than the entire eyeball glowing). The purpose behind this is for it to be used as an intimidation technique to aid in fighting (if your opponent is too scared, you'll have the upper hand). The light doesn't interfere with the rods or cones in their eyes, and thus does not effect their vision in any way. Apparently, the bioluminescent cells can be activated by intense focus, without the amplificata actually wanting it to happen-This can sometimes be used as a tell in combat, or to give them away in low-light conditions (along with their automatic tapetum lucidum, see next example below).
** On a related note, amplificatae ''do'' have night vision, created by a type of "retractable" tapetum lucidum (reflective coating on the inside of the eye; in daylight, it tends to make images less focused, hence why it isn't a permanent part in an amplificata's eye). It's created by the body when it senses low-light levels, by using special protiens to make a chemical film that coats the inside of the eye (it takes about 30 seconds to fully coat, and about 20 seconds for it to wear away when not needed). The tapetum lucidum in animals is responsible for the appearance of "glowing" eyes, when a very small portion of light hits it and is reflected back out of the pupil; The light reflected looks different in different animals, and in an amplificata, the reflected light is greenish-white.

* {{Hammer Space}}: Muffet has this-She has, on several occasions, pulled out books, tea-sets, pastries, and utensils out of seemingly nowhere.

* {{Heroic BSOD}}: Frequently occurs. Considering the implications of crossing many different universes and having villains with limitless power, this is understandable. A few notable examples are down below.

** Practically every character in the Flowey arc suffers from this at one point or another.

** Elizabeth has many layers of emotional and psychological barriers prevent people from knowing how she really feels but with team members that she feels that she can trust and with little to no one around to hear her is willing to peel back some of those layers to allow her true feelings to be known.

** In the first Ancient Ones, Muffet bakes the corpse of one of the recently killed vampire zombies of an earlier fight into baked goods, including muffins and meat pies. This is an allusion to Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd.
** During Asgore's meeting with the Daevas and demons from Inferno when he accepted the deal was an allusion to the infamous Eclipse scene from the manga series Berserk, up to having the crimson Behelit from Berserk being the tool that allows him to call down the Daevas to accept their deal.
* {{Imported Alien Phlebotinum}}: Corneria tends to have their technology spread. Both AEGIS and Project X have made use of Cornerian technology, especially G-Diffusers. Aegis also has a tendency to do this with any civilization it makes contact with.
* {{Improbable Age}}:
** Tadayoshi was promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant immediately following basic training, at the age of 18 (this is due to Project X's method of command; basic Amplificata Squad Leaders must be at least 1st Lieutenant (he was designated the leader of his squad due to his clever strategic thinking, still of some note among others in Project X). He was promoted to Captain only three months later (after completing special operations training, which all amplificatae may take directly after basic training; special forces officers are at least Captain rank). Tadayoshi was promoted to Commander in Project X not even a month later (due to a major {{Noodle Incident}} involving Agent A; Many in Project X say that he was promoted mostly by a mix of good and bad luck. The equivalent rank in the US Army would be Major, and the average age of a Major in the US military is 33). He has not been promoted since, despite more than six years since the beginning of the Ancient Ones, and his involvement in saving the multiverse. Is was rumored that he would be promoted directly to Colonel, but Project X decided not to promote him due to the unusually young age he is for his ''current'' rank.
** Marguerite was promoted all the way to Sergeant Major in Project X by the time she was 19, and was soon promoted to Lieutenant. Her current rank (held since before the 1st Ancient Ones) is Captain, received when she was 22 (the average age of a Captain in the US military is 27). She has not been promoted since, despite more than six years since the beginning of the Ancient Ones, and her involvement in saving the multiverse. She may have been up for a promotion, but it is thought that due to her already young age, mixed with office politics, she wasn't promoted (the higher brass notice that she works well with Tadayoshi, and prefers her to be in the same squad as him. Due to the rules on squad leadership in Project X, one of the two would have to be of a higher rank; The guy who can bench press your average four-door sedan will always win out against a normal human in this regard).
** In general, the officers in Project X are unusually young. This is due to the inability to find enough volunteers willing to join Project X (most would rather join their national military, where the chance of getting into a fight with a superhuman is, oddly enough, lower than it is in Project X), and the inability to use conscription (as an international police organization, it is barred from conscripting members). This is especially true for amplificatae, who start at 18 (normal for enlisted military, but they are instantly given ranks as officers as compensation for the procedures, despite not even having a degree. This is partially made up for in a special technical academics course that's given during the basic military training, though this isn't useful outside of Project X, and doesn't count as a degree or even credits).
* {{Interspecies Friendship}}: Humans, monsters, anthropomorphic animals, pokemon, etc. are all found in the RP, and with a few exceptions, it could be said that all of the heroes (a quite diverse cast) are friends to an extent.
* {{Jumping on a Grenade}}: Tadayoshi does this while on the Traveler in the first Ancient Ones. Good thing he has a {{Healing Factor}}.

It doesn't really fit in with the theme of "most simple" though; considering how complicated the stories around it can be.
* {{Magicians Are Wizards}}: Aside from being an occultist, Elizabeth knows plenty of skill that illusionist deploy. Most likely she learned them knowing that they would be useful for her when she can't use magic to save her ass.
* {{Magick}}: The magic in the Gnosis verse is powerful but unlike the magic in most universe it is spontaneous and invisible. The rare occasion where it does produce see able results should be taken as a sign of warning as to how powerful a mage or being is.
* {{Magnetic Weapons}}: Aegis soldiers can be seen carrying these a lot and are seen as Aegis favorite form of weapons.
* {{Musical Spoiler}}: Zalgo incidents are sometimes preluded by strange otherworldly sounds or music.
* {{Masquerade}}: Unsurprisingly the world of Gnosis has this due to many human and non human conspiracies not wanting the public to know what is actually going on in their world. Ultimately by the second RP it took a universal merger and a powerful crystal to destroy the masquerade in Gnosis.
* {{Necessarily Evil}}: Aegis is well aware of the unethical and down right evil actions they have done to protect humanity but find their actions a necessary to insure that the world does not end.
* {{NGO Superpower}}: Aegis has no ties to any government from their world and posses enough funding, personal and resources to almost make themselves their own nation without borders. Yet they still have heavy cooperation with many government agencies and pull in agents and resources from them. They also keep a close eye on many governments in order to insure that none of their attempts at harnessing anomalies as weapons can't cause a dooms day scenario and to prevent cults and supernatural creatures from being in a position of great power, a battle that they are somewhat successful at.
* {{Nightmare Fetishist}}: Elizabeth likes meddling with the more occult, supernatural and stranger side to her world and most likely agreed to work with Conundrum just to see the many strange worlds the multiverse has.

** Marie Crestgate eventually becomes this, after learning how to control her demon transformation.
** The "embodiment" version of Chara Dreemurr, who is the literal embodiment of violence. Despite this; they're closer to the original, nice version than anything else, and their motives for taking up the mantle are actually out of benevolence.

** None of the angels that serve the Archons tend to be your typical angels and those that bare a human shape often have enough physical mutations and deformities to not make them your typical blue eyed, blond haired, feathery angel type. In fact many of the angels are either cyborgs or are fully mechanical beings with some being made of stones, glass, or pure energy.
** Pit and the Centurions are the only angels that are close to what many think of when the word angel comes up.

** Many of the demons that serve the Daevas are biomechanical in appearance and some beings that lurk in Inferno may have a demonic appearance but are not demons (Nepharites being a good example). Some demons were said to have forms so alien and grotesque that they border on being lovecraftian.
** Marie for the most part looks like a normal woman but when in her demon form it resembles more of a walking suit of armor than a living being.

** Goku is 37 but has the appearance of being 33 (because he died and was revived seven years later, during that time he didn't age and before he participated in the DBZ Universe 6 & 7 tournament, he trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for 3 days with Vegeta, the equivalent of 3 years in the time chamber).
** Vegeta is 44 but has the appearance of being 42 (because of Hyperbolic Time Chamber training).
** Henry Saladass, who looks 50, but is actually 69.

** Simon Petrikov. He's in his 50's by the time of his involvement in the second Ancient Ones, but even without the magic provided from his crown, he can naturally lift large bookshelves and toss them (for a normal human in his 50's, this is quite impressive). When including his powers from the crown, he turns his badassery up to eleven. Though, as he is more of {{The Strategist}}, he tends to hang back instead of fight.

** Tadayoshi's real name is actually Dan (he's an American); Tadayoshi is a nickname received by the citizens of Tokyo (where he is stationed), which has caught on as his default name. However the applications isn't for destruction alone as the magic of Gnosis has great versatility on how it can be used and more often is used to gain insight to the secrets of the cosmos and to defend the practitioners from hostile supernatural beings and forces, it also has great utility use. Another reason for the negative connotation is due to the negative reputation magic has with certain groups and with the gods of that world that feel threaten with the idea of humans possessing such power to not only bend reality to their will but also try to change the status quo. It is generally regarded that magic itself is an amoral force and that the real darkness from it are the practitioners who either go mad or fall into their temptations and inner darkness.
