* GoryDiscretionShot: Played with throughout the episode, as it's unclear whether the production team wanted to go all-out with specific shots or spare the audience from other moments of brutality. Glenn and Abraham's fatal beatdown with Lucille is only shown at the beginning, and then largely occurs offscreen for both cases... except when it cuts back to a full-body shot of Negan whacking the remains of Glenn's head, which are then shown in gory detail. Glenn's head is not shown in detail as Rick's group carries it back to the truck, but just prior to this, his and Abraham's remains are seen in full view, despite attempts to obscure the damage or make it out of focus.

Glenn's head is not shown in detail as Rick's group carries it back to the truck, but just prior to this, his and Abraham's remains are seen in full view, despite attempts to obscure the damage or make it out of focus. There's also the matter of the extensive practical effects needed to create the images of Glenn and Abraham's mangled heads, giving at least somewhat of a [[PragmaticAdaptation pragmatic reason]] as to why it wasn't quite as fully onscreen as it was in the comic.

* NotSoStoic:
** Michonne kept her composure fairly well throughout the ordeal, giving Negan a severe DeathGlare during the picking, though she quickly became revolted to see Abraham grossly cut down next to her, and later has a look of despair as Glenn dies. That said, when Negan is threatening to do terrible harm to Carl, her adopted son, that's when she really begins panicking and makes the risk of asking Negan to spare him and assuring him they get it. This is why Negan doesn't punish her for speaking out of turn, as even he can recognize that she is genuinely afraid and has more or less been cowed into submission.
** Carl is absolutely furious the entire night and forces himself to watch the whole affair, and doesn't show any fear. He wasn't close to Abraham so he was more angry with Negan on principle than anything. But when Negan begins gruesomely and sadistically killing Glenn, who he ''was'' good friends with? That's when he finally breaks and starts sobbing, though it's still with an absolutely ''furious'' glare on his face.

to:

* TonightSomeoneDies: Going in, everyone knew at least one person The advertisements for Season 7 and this episode emphasized that someone from the group would die.die this episode, partially due to the negative backlash the fandom had to the Season 6 finale to the point that some even mocked the show for having to assure them that the Lucille victim would actually be shown.

* DudeNotFunny: InUniverse, a wordless version. When Negan says that Lucille is a [[JustForPun vampire bat]] for the sheer amount of blood drawn with the two victims, none of them even crack a smile, considering their close friends just died. Noticing, he asks if the joke he made about the situation was really that bad.

Incredibly Lame Pun is a redirect and not a trope by itself. When a character likes to make puns from time to time, lame or otherwise, it's called Pungeon Master.

* IncrediblyLamePun: Negan is fond of these, knowing his victims don't dare react:
--> '''Negan:''' Lucille, is thirsty. She is a ''vampire bat''!
--> '''Negan:''' [Amputating Carl's arm with an axe] needs to happen now, ''chop chop.''

* DeathSeeker: The episode is titled "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be", after Jenner's cryptic warning in the first season finale that one day, Rick would ''wish'' that Jenner wouldn't have let them escape a group suicide in the exploding CDC; given that and the events of this episode, it's implied that while he doesn't say it, Rick finally wishes that he had indeed just ended it all for him and his loved ones back at the CDC after the horrors of this episode.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** The positioning of the remains at the end of the ColdOpen, being directly across from the middle of the RV, aligns almost exactly with Abraham's position in the line-up, or at least narrows it down to someone within his range.
** When driving the RV, Negan hits a walker whose head explodes against the windshield, and Negan turns back to ask Rick if he's reminded of anyone. While Negan's attention is turned, a ''second'' walker also gets its' head destroyed, foreshadowing that Negan took ''two'' victims.
** Rick's vision of a peaceful dinner with his family enjoying fresh food ultimately comes to pass in [[spoiler:the GrandFinale, when the surviving group members enjoy a peaceful dinner together. This also ends up being Rosita's last meal before she dies of a walker bite.]] Even the freshly baked bread eventually becomes a commodity that Alexandria enjoys by the time of Season 10.
** The final pan over the peaceful dinner ends with a shot of Glenn and Abraham. However, careful viewers will notice that Sasha is the other character most prominently in the shot, [[spoiler:the shot telling us who will be the last casualty of the group this season as Sasha dies in the season finale.]]

* ManlyTears: All the men have them after the deaths, most notably Daryl (since he inadvertently caused Glenn's death) and ''especially'' Rick when Negan nearly forces him cut his son's arm off.

** A weird case of combining this and FaceDeathWithDignity. Abraham doesn't make any attempt to actually fight back against Negan (considering his earlier threats), but he does give him a DyingMomentOfAwesome with his FamousLastWords.

!!Tropes:

* AddingInsultToInjury: As if emasculating his entire group, killing two of its strongest members and making off with Daryl wasn't bad enough, Rick's last view of the clearing (while driving off in the RV) shows a lone walker stopping to crouch down and eat the remains of Glenn's brain matter off the ground.

* BigGuyFatalitySyndrome: Abraham wordlessly volunteered to sacrifice himself and Negan ultimately took him up on the offer.
** [[WordOfSaintPaul According to Michael Cudlitz]], Negan's selection of his victim wasn't random at all; Negan methodically used his game of "eenie meanie minie mo" as a front to observe each group member's reaction to having Lucille pointed at them and determine who would be the logical choice to take out. [[spoiler:Negan himself later confirms in the Season 8 finale that he specifically picked Abraham, as he didn't want to kill Rick in front of Carl.]]
