Rarity and Pinkie Pie head for Manehattan, with Pinkie Pie excited to meet her sister Maud for their annual Pie Sisters' Surprise Swap Day, a day in which Pinkie and one of her sisters exchange gifts at sunset. Rarity is headed to the city to find a location for another boutique. After meeting Maud, Pinkie confides in Rarity that there's a store in Manehattan that sells rock pouches, which she knows Maud will love. Plus, since Maud always outdoes Pinkie in gift-giving, Pinkie wants that rock pouch more than anything. Under the guise of a sightseeing tour to help Rarity pick out the location of her new boutique, the three girls tour through the big city, stopping for lunch at a restaurant only a block away from the rock pouch shop. While Rarity distracts Maud, Pinkie heads to the shop, only to find that it's closed because the shop owner is on a sudden vacation to Canterlot, setting Pinkie on edge.

The trio continue their tour of the city, with Rarity trying to find more things that Maud likes, but the stoic Maud seems disinterested in everything Rarity comes up with. At an outdoor mall, Rarity and Pinkie spot a pony carrying the pouch Pinkie wants. Pinkie confides in the pony that she really wants it for her sister, begging him to sell it to her. He agrees to do so, if Pinkie will sell him her party cannon. Though heartbroken to part with it, Pinkie relents, giving up her party cannon to get the rock pouch.

At the end of the day, Maud and Pinkie finally swap their gifts in the park. Maud gets the rock pouch, while Pinkie's gift is cupcake-scented confetti for her party cannon. Pinkie is jubilant as ever, but once away from Pinkie, Rarity accidentally confesses that Pinkie gave up her party cannon to get the rock pouch. When Maud confronts Pinkie about it, Pinkie admits it, causing Maud to go find the pony who traded for Pinkie's cannon. She finds him, and after some encouragement by Rarity, finally agrees to trade the cannon back for the rock pouch. Pinkie admits that Maud's now gotten her two gifts in one day, and says that she'll have to do even better next year. Maud interrupts, saying that it doesn't matter what gift she gets, because she's doing it out of love. Pinkie and Maud hug, and Rarity congratulates them. She even shows off the location she picked out for her new boutique, with Pinkie and Maud saying that next year, they'll have a Pie Sisters' Surprise Swap Day... With Rarity.
