And the scene where the robot takes Zimmerman's form right in front of him is very reminiscent of the scene in ''Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay'' where the T-1000 shapeshifts into the form of a security guard right in front of said guard's eyes.

* InsistentTerminology: The voice of the TARDIS is very, very specific about things.
-->'''The Doctor:''' River needs me. I can't die now. \\
'''TARDIS Voice Interface:''' You will not die now. You will die in 32 minutes.
* {{Irony}}: Early in the episode, Mels blames Hitler's rise to power on the Doctor not being there to stop him. The Doctor actually saves Hitler's life by crashing the TARDIS into his office, interrupting an assassination. Even more ironic, Mels is the cause of the crash in the first place.

* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** The Doctor encouraging Mels, "If you stay alive, I'll marry you." He does.
** The Doctor says to himself that he'll regenerate. The TARDIS tells him that his [[ExactWords regenerative abilities are disabled]]. The TARDIS never claims it's due to the poison. The viewer would assume this, but down the line we find out the Doctor is out of regenerations at this point.

** Another in a long line of shout-outs to the short story "Literature/ContinuityErrors", Creator/StevenMoffat's first piece of official ''Doctor Who'' fiction. This time it's River's archaeology professor at Luna University, who is named in the end credits as "Professor Candy". "Literature/ContinuityErrors" opens at Luna University, where a Professor Candy is scheduled to give a lecture. (It's interesting to note, given the themes of this season, that the subject of the lecture was to have been that mysterious and dangerous legendary figure known only as the Doctor.) Professor Candy originally appeared in the Franchise/BerniceSummerfield books and audios, and Bernice is the companion in "Literature/ContinuityErrors". He's also a known, if involuntary, time traveller; the Afterword of ''Decalog 2'' reveals that the Doctor dumped him in 1996 to stop him giving his lecture. The "I had yesterday off" joke is also from "Literature/ContinuityErrors".

As River recovers in a hospital bed, we learn that she has used up ''all'' of her regeneration energy to overcome the poison; [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E9ForestOfTheDead her next death will be permanent]]. As the Doctor and the audience [[ForgoneConclusion already knows]]. The Doctor, Amy and Rory leave her in the best hospital in the universe, and the Doctor leaves a brand-new blank little TARDIS-shaped book by her bedside.
