* CaptainObvious: Pritchard calls Adam midway through the mission and says that he thinks that the mercenaries might be pulling out. Adam, who has seen evidence of their departure over the last few minutes (including several goons outright stating such) says, "[[DeadpanSnarker Yeah, I've kinda been getting that feeling.]]"

to:

* JumpScare: If you let Barrett get close enough, he'll go for a Jensen-style takedown involving a NeckLift followed by a point-blank machine-gunning. If you don't know he can even do that, it's quite startling, especially since the grab gives you a sudden faceful of Barrett's big ugly mug.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Barrett's self-destruct mechanism leaves nothing but a few small fires and a blood smear on the floor.

'''Mission 4:'''
!Highland Park

Adam disembarks just outside Highland Park, an abandoned industrial area.

He finds several members of the Motor City Bangers standing near an entrance into the industrial park and asks if they know what's going on inside. The leader tells him that a spec ops group has been moving supplies in and out over the last month. Adam thanks him and continues on through a nearby walkway.

Inside, Adam peers out through a window and sees the soldiers near one of the caravans. Adam realizes that they were the ones who attacked Sarif Industries and killed Megan, and watches as a man named Barrett tells the leader (who is an augment) that they've been compromised and someone got to the neural hub before [[CallForward Manderley]] could. The leader tells him it's too late to fix the situation and orders him to take care of all loose ends, including a "[[{{Foreshadowing}} dutchman]]".

Adam radios Malik and orders her to stay out of sight, and continues on into the facility. After dispatching several troops, he makes it to the next floor down and radios Pritchard and Sarif to inform them that the base is under FEMA's control and looks like an internment camp. Sarif tells him that's impossible because of half of their contracts are government issue. Adam relays that the soldiers that attacked the building are at the site as they speak. Sarif tells him to find the person who's giving the orders and make them talk, then to call him back.

The elevator arrives several floors down and Adam exits. He sneaks past several soldiers who are pulling out and many security cameras, and Pritchard calls again to tell him that the leader is still one floor below him. Adam eventually reaches another elevator and takes it down.

Once there, he is ambushed by Barrett, who knocks him down with a single punch. Barrett calls him out for sabotaging his operation, and the leader tells him to deal with it before leaving on an elevator.

Adam defeats Barrett and orders him to give up the information he knows. Barrett laughs at him for believing FEMA is the one running the show, and says that there are worse enemies to worry about. Barrett tells him to go to the Hengsha Court Gardens in Shanghai, then attempts to [[TakingYouWithMe kill him by blowing himself up]]. Adam dives away just before Barrett explodes.

Malik radios to ask if he's alright, and he tells her to patch him to Sarif. Malik says they have to exfiltrate first, and he heads back up through the nearby elevator to the landing pad and boards the plane back to Sarif Industries.

Adam arrives back at the building and is messaged by Pritchard, who tells him to visit his office first before debriefing Sarif. Adam goes to Pritchard's office, and the latter tells him that the signal from Derelict Row was active for more than a year before it was shut down. Adam is shocked at the revelation. Pritchard tells him whoever hacked into them just before the attack used a backdoor channel that he didn't even know existed. He tells Adam that Sarif was the one who created the backdoor, specifically as a way to bypass their internal firewalls. He asks him to talk to Sarif and find out the truth of the matter before leaving.

Outside Sarif's office, Adam meets William Taggart, the founder of the Humanity Front organization. Taggart tells him that he doesn't support Sarif Industries' pursuit of augmentation technology, and says that he will fight them through legal means before leaving.

Adam confronts Sarif in his office and asks what he knows about the firewall. Sarif initially tries to play it off, but Adam persists with his questioning. Sarif eventually reveals that the backdoor channel was for a security consultant he hired to research new recruits including Adam, because of his previous history with SWAT. He sends Adam an email with the investigator's findings and cautions that sometimes the past should stay in the past before giving him his credentials for Shanghai. He tells him to check out the location Barrett gave at the FEMA base.

Pritchard meets Adam outside his office. Adam tells him that he's handled the issue with Sarif, but Pritchard says that he will continue to backtrace the signal in the hopes of finding more information.

Adam meets Malik at the helipad, and they head off for Hengsha...

!Tropes:

* TheAlcatraz: An email points out that there is a secret prison deep underground where dissidents will be sent if they cause trouble.
* ArmCannon: Barrett wields one.
* TheBigGuy[=/=]TheBrute: Barrett himself, who wields a set of heavy armor.
* CallForward: There are references to an "REX-84" and a plan for a central anti-terrorist coalition in the base, which are likely references to the "RX-84" contingency plan and UNATCO from the original game.
* ContractualBossImmunity: Barrett counters the standard enemy takedowns, and must be defeated through other means.
* CutsceneIncompetence: Barrett is able to get the drop on Adam and lay him out in one punch, even if the player successfully snuck through the FEMA base without alerting any guards.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: Subverted. Barrett tries this once Jensen has defeated him in battle by giving him some crucial information (because it seems like he is bleeding out), but then immediately attempts to blow him and Adam up with a self-destruct mechanism. It doesn't work.
* DoorToBefore: After defeating Barrett, a nearby door leads directly back to the helipad (which was locked from the other side).
* DueToTheDead: The gang members outside the FEMA base.
--> '''Gang Member''': Rest in peace, Big Rizzle.
--> '''Adam''': [[DeadpanSnarker Yeah, rip.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: One of the spec ops soldiers tells his men not to do anything to the FEMA personnel who are still at the base, because they could deal with them again one day in the future.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** The mercenary leader mentions cleaning up loose ends, including someone named "the Dutchman".
** One of the spec ops captains mentions that they should be ready to head to Shanghai after pulling out of the FEMA base.
** Several mentions are made of Taggart, including his appearance at a charity event and his aide, Sandoval, being unable to attend with him...
* TheFundamentalist: Taggart, who runs Humanity Front and opposes any augmentation technology because he believes the world isn't ready for it.
* GreyAndGrayMorality:
** Pointed out repeatedly during the social battle. Sarif himself points out that even though he wants to advance humanity by offering augmentations, he still wants the company to get paid at the end of the day. He later reveals to Adam the purpose of the backdoor access (it was to investigate new recruits like Adam) and tells him that the past should stay in the past, but was also the one who had Adam augmented against his consent.
** Likewise, Taggart is extremely offput by Adam and says that he will fight him and Sarif Industries through legal means to stop the spread of augmentation, even though Adam points out that it was necessary to save his life.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Taggart believes that humanity is not ready for augmentation technology and is doing everything in his power to fight it, yet he himself wears glasses (which are a non-mechanical way to augment his vision).
* NeverFoundTheBody: Barrett's self-destruct mechanism leaves nothing but a blood smear on the floor.
* PrecisionFStrike: When Adam tells Malik to stay out of sight because the mercenaries that attacked Sarif are there, she yells, "Oh, fuck!"
* SeeYouInHell:
--> '''Barrett''': Tell 'em Barrett sent you '''straight to Hell!'''
* StatingTheObvious: Pritchard calls Adam midway through the mission and says that he thinks that the mercenaries might be pulling out. Adam, who has seen evidence of their departure over the last few minutes (including several goons outright stating such) says, "[[DeadpanSnarker Yeah, I've kinda been getting that feeling.]]"
* TakingYouWithMe: Barrett tries this against Adam. It doesn't work.
* TemptingFate: Several of the soldiers can be heard cursing at Adam (whose identity they don't know yet) and practically begging for them to attack them, as they talk about how much they'd like to beat him up.
* VillainBall: Barrett reveals the location of the co-conspiractors before trying to blow up himself and Jensen. Had he not done so, Adam would have had no leads whatsoever and the villains' plan would have gone off without a hitch.
* WakeupCallBoss: Barrett is the first major boss in the game, and must be defeated through direct combat. In the Director's Cut, he's also one because it is the first indication that the developers have redesigned the boss encounters (there are no longer enough gas/explosive canisters to defeat him in the main room itself, necessitating the search of other storage rooms nearby).
* WeaksauceWeakness: Barrett has a weakness to the gas barrels located around the immediate area.
* WhatTheHellHero: Athene (Sarif's secretary) and later Sarif himself will rail at Adam for ''daring'' to ask a straightforward question like what he was doing with an unprotected backdoor system channel before and during the mercenary attack.
