!Tropes:

* AcePilot: Malik is smart enough to keep the VTOL flying through a storm after it was struck by lightning, dispatch the security leader who dispatched to arrest (and presumably execute) her by taking off and going into a steep climb that causes him to fall out of the cargo bay and outwit several military drones through sheer flying ability.
* BadassBoast: "You think you've got me? You haven't got me."
* BadassNormal: Malik establishes herself as a VTOL pilot, but repeatedly walks away from incidents that should have killed her, including using a wingsuit to dive into the open cargo bay of an airplane and taking out one of the drones that were implicitly said to be top-of-the-line Belltower technology and were trying to destroy her.
* BadBoss: Cheng, who sends his enforcer to detain and execute Malik after he finds out that she discovered Belltower's secret practice of kidnapping scientists.
* BetterThanSex: Evelyn and Malik talk about the latter's daredevil antics in the opening chapter, and reference this trope by name.
* BreakTheCutie: Evelyn is left devastated after Malik's apparent death, and is told that the only reason she isn't getting a worse punishment is because her boyfriend has powerful connections.
* CallForward:
** Evelyn and Malik's friendship (which is only discussed briefly in Human Revolution) is discussed further here. To note, their first conversation has Evelyn remarking on how she needs to call Lee Hong back, and Malik remarking on how he's a hothead prone to violence.
** It's mentioned that Malik and Evelyn's employer, Cheng, deals with the Red Arrow triad.
** Malik remarks on whether Khan was watching her through the drone's camera as she stared at it defiantly, a situation that could be repeated later in Human Revolution if she is left to die at Belltower's hands.
* ChekhovsGun: The wingsuit, which saves Malik's life when she rams the final drone and is forced to eject from the craft.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Discussed. Malik wonders if Khan was controlling the drone and saw her defiantly staring as she rammed the VTOL into it.
* HellishCopter: Malik is once again at the controls of a chopper as it gets shown down by enemy forces, though unlike Human Revolution, she is merely presumed dead instead of being attacked at the crash site.
* Irony: Malik interacts with Narhari Khan, the same individual who (depending on the player's runthrough of Human Revolution) may have been the one to kill her after the VTOL crashed. In the novella, he comments that he hopes Malik is a capable pilot.
* KarmaHoudini: Unlike Lee Hong (who gets his comeuppance in Human Revolution), Cheng gets away scot-free with his antics (which include knowingly participating in human trafficking and ordering Belltower to destroy Malik's aircraft).
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: Belltower assumes that Malik is dead after she suicide-charges the last drone, even though she used her wingsuit to escape just before the impact.
* OhCrap: When Malik discovers that the cargo she's been ferrying are kidnapped scientists, one of whom is executed by Khan after he complains about the situation. Later, she gets the exact same reaction when she sees Cheng using a phone and staring at her at the helipad.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: Malik destroys the last Belltower drone by ramming it with her aircraft, which destroys it.
* RunningGag: Just like the game, Khan gets knocked down and injured in a humiliating way (here, getting a head wound after he sits in a folding chair during the flight to the Bel Canto without any safety harnesses).
* TheTriadsAndTheTongs: Malik mentions that Cheng works for some of the local triads to ship drugs, and that they are his "elite clients".
* WretchedHive: Hengsha.

The aircraft reaches Hengsha and lands at a nearby airfield. Once there, Malik and Evelyn are shocked to discover that their employer, Jai Cheng, has contracted them to fly out more cargo immediately. Malik wonders if the job was ordered by the Red Arrow triad before a group of Belltower soldiers, led by Narhari Khan, arrives to board the aircraft. Despite her hesitance at their new flightplan, Cheng orders her and Evelyn to ferry the soldiers to an unmarked location near the Yangtze River.

The two pilots eventually discover their destination - a cargo ship called the Bel Canto. Khan and the other Belltower soldiers disembark and tell them to wait until they return, and both women discuss the cargo they're supposed to ferry. The ship is soon loaded with several white containers and Malik realizes that they'll have to smuggle them back to Hengsha.

The VTOL safely lands in Hengsha, and Malik covertly trails Khan and the stasis pods to a nearby meeting site. Once there, she finds that the four stasis pods contained people who formally worked for an augmentation company and were forcibly kidnapped and made to work for a rival competitor. Upon seeing one of the awoken scientists start complaining that he wants to go home and get executed by Khan, Malik flees back to the copter and takes off before the Belltower soldiers can stop her.

Malik realizes that her retinal augmentations caught the footage of Khan executing the scientists as the VTOL lands at an alternate airfield. However, both women are surprised when Cheng arrives and orders Evelyn to leave. He forces Malik to stay put with his security officer, Lau, while he reports her whereabouts to Belltower, but she flees the scene by taking off and causing the man to fall out of the cargo hatch.

!Fallen Angel

Faridah Malik skydives into the cargo bay of a nearby VTOL near Hengsha using a wingsuit and is congratulated by her friend and co-pilot, Evelyn Carmichael, for doing such an insane feat while they return from a cargo run. As they near the city, the discussion turns to Evelyn's relationship with her hotheaded boyfriend Lee Hong, but Malik keeps quiet after realizing she is trying to control Evelyn's life.

Cheng radios Malik and tells her to return to the base under threat of hurting Evelyn. Malik counters that Evelyn doesn't know anything and that she has proof of Belltower's atrocities. In response, Khan authorizes the launch of several unmanned drones to destroy the VTOL.

She manages to destroy the drones, though not before ramming the last operational one with her aircraft and goes down in flames. Khan and the Belltower operatives presume that she's dead, and report the news to a horrified and grief-stricken Evelyn before telling her to keep quiet about what she's seen.

On a nearby tower, Faridah recovers and remembers what happened - she bailed out of the burning VTOL and activated her wingsuit, which allowed her to glide to safety. Realizing that she is now presumed dead and labeled as a thief, she calls a close friend and asks to call in a favor. The man, Maji, agrees to get her out of the city and pass on a message to Evelyn in the near future

When asked where she wants to go, she responds that she'd like to go work for Sarif Industries in Detroit...
