* The third Literature/ArrivalsFromTheDark novel reveals that the end of the century-long Void Wars has put thousands (if not more) veterans out of work. Most were unable to adjust to peacetime life on Earth and in the colonies (or just needed more money than their pension provided), so they signed up in droves for the Defenders to the enigmatic Lo'ona Aeo. Being a mercenary isn't the same as fighting to defend humanity from Earth's first enemy, but it's a paycheck. Besides, the Lo'ona Aeo are anything but stingy (a mostly post-scarcity hedonistic culture), so the pay is good. The main character in particular signed up to pay for mortgage for his family's artificial island in the Pacific. This was definitely a boon to the Lo'ona Aeo as prior to that their Defenders were mostly civilians from among the colonists they allowed to settle their no longer used outer planets. Now the civvies could be relegated to escort duty for their trade caravans, while the soldiers can go out on dangerous patrols.

* Manga/FrierenBeyondJourneysEnd: Serie is a BloodKnight who loves battle, something which suited her well during the ForeverWar against the Demon King. Flamme once speculated that Serie would never defeat the Demon King because she was unable to imagine herself living in the peaceful world that would follow. After Himmel's party defeated the Demon King, Serie founded the Continental Magic Association specifically so she could identify and cultivate similar minded mages.

* This was one of many factors that caused UsefulNotes/TheCrusades. At the start of TheHighMiddleAges, knights were becoming increasingly commonplace and thousands of young aristocrats with no hope of inheriting lands promised to their elder brothers were made professional killing machines with no purpose in peacetime, with many turning to banditry as a result. Pope Urban II gave them an outlet for their bloodlust and an opportunity to claim lands of their own.

* VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight: The antagonist of the game seeks to ResurrectTheVillain after coming to the conclusion that without said villain to fight, he has no purpose in life. Defeat him with violence (and thus end the game prematurely), and not only will he metaphorically reflect on how with no wolves to fight against, the shepherd is unnecessary, but Alucard comes to the conclusion that he chose a life of warfare because it was the only way he knew.
