This Trope has its origins in the fact that small dogs were largely associated with the rich. Up until the mid-20th century, smaller dog breeds were usually used as status symbols for the wealthy, while larger dog breeds were bred primarily for practical purposes, such as farming, hunting, and manual labor. Because small dogs were useless when it came to work, thus emerged the stereotype of them being lazy and pampered. Even after dogs began to become associated with companionship as opposed to wealth or practicality, this stereotype managed to stick.
