* In Film/Commando, BigBad Arius is something of an afterthought compared to the intense rivalry of hero John Matrix and his EvilCounterpart turned Arius's Dragon Bennett. While Arius is just one more would-be dictator to Matrix, Bennet is a traitor who helped kill their former teammates and kidnapped his daughter. On Bennet's end, he hates Matrix for getting him thrown out of the military and their special forces unit back in the day while also having a twisted sense of respect, which combine to want him to prove himself better than Matrix. He outright refused payment once he learned his target would be Matrix.

** Series/PowerRangersInSpace: The first and arguably the most iconic. Astronema, chief henchwoman to Dark Specter, is [[spoiler:the Red Ranger's long-lost sister, Karone. She tries to defect once she learns the truth, but is recaptured and made into a pure-evil cyborg. She's eventually saved in the finale.]]
** Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder: Zeltrax is [[spoiler:Terrence "Smitty" Smith, Dr. Oliver's old college buddy who's been nursing a grudge for years. Unlike most examples, Smitty/Zeltrax was NotBrainwashed, and there is no saving him in the end.]]
** Series/PowerRangersMysticForce: Koragg the Knight Wolf is [[spoiler:Leanbow, Red Ranger Nick's long-lost father. The power of fatherly love breaks the brainwashing on him and he joins the Rangers in the final arc of the season -- just in time for the Master to try to turn Nick into the new Koragg.]]
** Series/PowerRangersRPM. Tenaya-7, the TokenHuman in Venjix's robotic army, is [[spoiler:Black Ranger Dillon's long-lost sister. What follows is lifted beat for beat from Astronema's story in in Space: she tries to defect when she learns the truth, but is recaptured and made into a pure evil cyborg. She's eventually saved in the finale.]]
** Series/PowerRangersBeastMorphers, the Avatars are digital duplicates of Blaze (Red Ranger Devon's martial arts rival) and Roxy (Blue Ranger Ravi's romantic interest), carrying out Evox's evil plans while their physical bodies are comatose. Roxy in particular loves to mess with Ravi's head by pretending that her true personality is trying to reassert itself.
** Series/PowerRangersCosmicFury: [[spoiler:Ollie the Blue Ranger is brainwashed by Lord Zedd in the premiere episode and spends the rest of the season either attempting to kill his friends or building a machine that turns villains into Physical Gods. They finally break Zedd's hold on him in the penultimate episode, and he becomes the EleventhHourRanger.]]

Such examples include the aforementioned first two Film/LethalWeapon movies, Film/TheLastBoyScout, Film/LastActionHero, Film/TheLongKissGoodnight, and Film/TheNiceGuys.

** Arguably the most famous case of this is the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, as pictured above. After all, it's Vader who kills Luke's mentor, pursues him across the galaxy, cuts off his hand, and is Luke's FallenHero father. By comparison, there's very little going on between Luke and the Emperor other than the Emperor going for a fairly standard attempt to corrupt Luke to TheDarkSide and then saying WeCanRuleTogether. In the initial plans for the series, the Emperor was just going to be a PuppetKing while figures around him such as Vader and Tarkin played a DragonInChief sort of role.

* In WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse Emperor Belos is a GreaterScopeVillain who runs a coven system and enforces the rules and the one who wants Eda Clawthorne to be captured or forced to join his coven. Tends to overlap with DragonInChief, and may lead to a DragonTheirFeet situation, where the hero and the dragon only settle their score after the BigBad has already been killed or defeated. Naturally, a subtrope of both ItsPersonal and TheDragon. Compare with TheHeavy where a villain other than the BigBad has the biggest villain role, and RivalFinalBoss in which TheRival is also TheDragon. Also compare LancerVsDragon when the second most prominent members of each team faces each other.

* ComicBook/XMen villain Spiral acts primarily in service of her boss Mojo, but he usually stays in his own dimension while she does all the footwork for him on Earth, in addition to her own schemes on the side. This has made her a much more direct and personal enemy of the X-Men than Mojo himself.

* Literature/InheritanceCycle: Eragon's mentor Brom had a long-standing feud with Morzan, King Galbatorix's right-hand man. Much of this has to do with Morzan being Brom's EvilFormerFriend and fellow pupil who killed Brom's dragon in battle years ago.
