Added example(s) - Anglesey/Ynys Mon

Added DiffLines:

* The island of Anglesey, off the coast of North Wales, required two separate invasions by the Romans before it could be considered pacified. Legends noted by Roman commentators, principally Tacitus, describe an island which was at the centre of native British religion, where the Druidical cult worshipped dark Gods and performed ritual human sacrifice to their deities. The reputation of this mysterious island - visible from the Welsh mainland as a dark land of mist-shrouded forests on the other side of an ocean strait - would have been terrifying to the Roman soldiers tasked with conquering it.

* In ''Literature/TheVazulaChronicles'', the human Heath, the dragon Reka, and the mermaid Merletta all discover Vazula, a long-deserted island kingdom covered in stone ruins. Heath has found legends that magic-users once lived in harmony with magicless people on Vazula, and Reka detects dragon magic all over the island, but it isn't until the last book that they find solid evidence of what happened to the inhabitants.

* ''VideoGame/TheForest'' is actually set on a peninsula, but it might as well be an island thanks to the impassable mountains cutting it off from the mainland. It otherwise plays the trope completely straight, with cannibals, humanoid and [[BodyHorror not-so-humanoid]] monsters, a sprawling cave system, [[spoiler: and an abandoned underground research facility devoted to studying a powerful ancient artifact]].
