* The producers of ''Film/DeathOfAGunfighter'' ran into a problem. Due to disagreements between star Creator/RichardWidmark and director Creator/RobertTotten, the latter ended up being replaced by Creator/DonSiegel. The finished product contained an almost equal amount of footage from both directors and neither would accept the credit for directing the film. The Directors' Guild of America wouldn't allow the movie to be released without a credited director. (They also determined that the movie didn't reflect either director's vision.) So, with the DGA's approval, the producers created a fictional director to credit the film to as an alias for both Totten and Siegel. Thus, the "career" of AlanSmithee began.
