Anatomically, the human heart is located beneath the lower sternum, with only a very slight tilt to the left. Because of this, anatomists, being very precise people, say that the heart (meaning the ''centre'' of the heart) lies to the left of the sternum. In fiction, this position is greatly exaggerated, and it is common to depict it as lying just under the left shoulder, level with the armpit, in a position where the left lung ought to be. The thumping sensation that people feel in the upper-left chest that creates this impression is actually the aortic pulse.

* [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Situs_inversus Situs inversus,]] inversus totalis]] is a rare congenital condition in which the [[OrganDodge major visceral organs are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions; positions]]; it may or may not include the heart.heart, and when the heart is mirrored, its arrangement is referred to as [[http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextrocardia Dextrocardia]]. It's actually ''better'' for the person with Situs inversus totalis if they do have Dextrocardia, as this usually means there aren't any circulatory defects that would need to be corrected. However, because organs are chiral, and thus do not form a perfect mirror image when flipped, it does mean that should the patient require an organ transplant (of which normal organs are obviously much more common), the blood vessels require being re-routed to ensure blood flows through them in the correct directions.
