The late 2000s and early 2010s saw the emergence of a new sub-genre in adventure games, the so-called "environmental narrative game" genre (or ENG for short). Realizing that adventure games in the past had tended to emphasize storytelling and art direction over gameplay, developers in this genre followed that principle to its LogicalExtreme and removed virtually all gameplay and interactivity from their games in order to focus the player's attention on the story, visuals and experience. Games in the genre have also variously been referred to as "interactive fiction games" (not to be confused with text adventures or VisualNovels), "interactive stories", "story exploration games" and "first-person experiences", among other labels. Detractors of the genre sometimes dismissively refer to these games as "walking simulators", although that term has since come to be used as a neutral descriptor of the genre by many critics, developers and fans. The term "walking simulator" has also been used to describe games like VideoGame/DayZ, but that's not the genre we're discussing here.

* VideoGame/SilentHills -- or more specifically, PT, its "playable teaser" -- took this route as a stark departure from the gameplay found in the rest of its franchise, where instead of third-person SurvivalHorror gameplay, it's a first-person exploration/puzzle game with a more tighter, player-oriented PsychologicalHorror lean with no combat (though there is still a death state). Due to the cancellation of the full Silent Hills project, it's unknown how much the final game would have taken this route.
* VideoGame/SilentHillTheShortMessage similarly explores Franchise/SilentHill in this manner, being a much lighter horror experience with less puzzles or combat, and instead focuses on PsychologicalHorror storytelling through navigating through and interacting with the environment: an abandoned apartment complex under the influence of "the Silent Hill Phenomenon".

* VideoGame/DwellersEmptyPath is a 2D Retraux example modelled after an old UsefulNotes/GameBoy RPG. Combat and puzzles are eschewed in favour of exploring a sprawling forest and fantasy kingdom, taking in the sights, interacting with the inhabitants, and learning more about the world, all of which are accompanied by pixel art illustrations from Creator/TemmieChang. This is Hangingd in the DevelopersRoom, with Temmie hoping you liked the game even though "you don't really do much except walk around and make images appear".
