Considering that they arrest Mario for allegedly causing the Sprites to disappear, one would think they'd be more willing to just ''give'' him any that they had, so the island could be cleaned more quickly. That's not even going into the more ridiculous ways the Piantas are obstructive (for example, the one in Hotel Delphino who refuses to let Mario go into the pool - and thus get the Shine Sprite in plain sight in the room - because he's not wearing proper swim gear, thus forcing him to go on a ridiculous FetchQuest to enter the pool through the air vent).

While an unpleasant and hostile {{Jerkass}} who is highly uncooperative during the investigation phase, once he's actually on the stand he is largely upfront and truthful about what he thinks he saw. While Phoenix naturally discovers plenty of contradictions that tear his testimony apart, it turns out to be a case of him being tricked by the culprit as opposed to him lying or forgetting what he saw.
