** The three were more focused on running away from the Horseman and Lady van Tassel hid the skull as they approached; Katarina and Masbeth were more focused on escape than trying to take back the skull and Ichabod may not have had time to see it for himself. It may have even been that control of the Horseman through the skull normally required more ritual and preparation, with Ichabod only able to stop the Horseman by returning the skull at the tree because its role as a gateway meant that the rules could be relaxed as it was essentially a PlaceOfPower with particular ties to the Horseman.
