** Maybe they did try, [[RealityIsUnrealistic asteroids and comets are hard to break up]] with nuclear missiles -one of the few things ''Film/{{Armageddon}}'' got right-, the movie starts by telling us ''all'' efforts to stop it have failed. * Not to be that guy but is there any specific reason why we couldn't have just thrown a nuke or two at it. I'll admit not to be the most astute astronomer but couldn't we have just jury rigged some rockets with all the warheads we could fit on there and just broken up the asteroid that way? Sure it hitting the earth would've sucked but it would be, theoretically, survivable.

** Not a chance. While, yes, you can airstrip hop in a small plane if it is fitted with an oversized "ferry" tank, a plane that small wouldn't be able to carry one and it takes best part of a week to fit one and would take several days worth of flying up Canada and across Greenland, Iceland, Faroes, and down over Scotland to reach England; stopping every 4-500 miles to refuel and rest. There is no way a plane that small could manage it. Maybe Dodge's dad planned on using it to reach a better airport where he could find a more suitable plane, only explanation that works (or he was planning on just crashing into the sea in a vain attempt).
