- How did prot end up in the mental hospital in the first place? He shows up at the station and tries to help a lady, makes a remark about how bright Earth is, and the next thing we know he's been committed. A person can only be committed against their will if they're a danger to themselves or others, and there's a lot of legal procedures involved. Even if he's delusional, prot is clearly harmless.
- It's mentioned by Dr. Chakraborty that he was originally taken in to Bellevue Hospital on suspicion of being high on hallucinogens. Once they found out that wasn't the case, they probably moved him to the mental health ward. He was finally transferred to Dr. Powell's office once Bellevue failed to get anywhere. There is no mention of him being involuntarily committed. It's possible prot merely took this an a new step on his journey of discovery and went with it to meet new types of people.
