** [[spoiler: The best guess is that (1) they're probably worked to death over time; and (2) additionally, it is **strongly** implied that the MegaCorp behind the tablets hasn't disclosed what they're doing to pretty much anyone (the Governor included), or they would have been able to "fix things up" for the Governor without the whole round of test tampering by simply grabbing his son after-the-fact.]]

* Additionally: The Thinning test is only given to first through twelfth-graders. Assuming you pass every time, you will live to adulthood. But by living to adulthood, you become an imminent threat because you can now potentially have children (unless of course, you got pregnant as a teen or something, but it's not likely the new society would stand for that). YMMV, but it seems like it would make more sense to simply sterilize sexually mature adults, institute a one-child policy, or ''something'' that would affect adults. It makes less sense to kill children who might still contribute to the "great society" despite a yearly score on a standardized test.

*** At least in terms of filming choices and the like, there's a case that some of the "less horrifying" options might have been even more deeply troubling.

* In the movie, it is implied that the Governor gives a single command for The Thinning for the entire state. Considering the size of Texas (presuming a similar population to now), you would apparently have had *tens of thousands* of students strapped into execution chairs all day awaiting their deaths.

** [[spoiler:Remember that the students we see being terrorised are the ones being sent to the factories as labourers. It may be that their experience is deliberately made as terrifying as possible so their fate in the factory comes as a relief, and so they are discouraged from trying to run away or cause trouble because they know how bad the alternative is.]]
*** It's possible that all of the above might have been explored in the sequel; however, the controversies surrounding Logan Paul led to it getting canceled, meaning we might never find out the answers to these questions.

* What possible purpose is served by making what is a relatively humane death (euthanasia) absolutely terrifying for the older kids? They may as well have just lined the group of teens up and shot them against a wall, at least that would be quick. Drawing it out by taking them to a terrifying dark room underground after they've been forced to strip and redress, then using euthanasia machines that make a sound like a even scarier dentist's drill -- it just doesn't make any sense. Why not use all the money spent on scary guards and their equipment and uniforms and instead lead the kids into a calm environment where they are quickly and immediately dispatched in a serene-as-possible setting?

* And the [[spoiler: executed people are still alive. How does that reduce the population? Are they worked to death? Also would 5% culling each year even work? Shouldn't they have population limiters or something for a better population decrease?]]

* If every country is expected to reduce population by 5% every year, then what is the end goal? It's never stated. Obviously, they don't want the population to get below a certain threshold in order to maintain genetic diversity, not to mention a functional society/economy. And how long has this been going? [[spoiler:And why do they need so many factory workers?]]
