During the Battle of Mengedda, Saubon sees a dead soldier who he quickly recognises as himself. Since the battle is at Mengedda, a topoi, the reader assumes it’s some Outside-related nonsense which is simply included to creep the reader out. When Saubon dies at Dagliash years later though, his POV describes his descent into Hell, and during the POV he is transported back to Mengedda, only this time he inhabits the dead body he recognised as himself, and tries to scream to his actual self to not trust Kellhus. What was once a throwaway spooky moment becomes much more horrifying.
