* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: He can be seen as the Prequel Trilogy's early answer to Chewbacca, being a distinctly alien sidekick character amongst a cast of humans and droids. Notably, both Chewie and Jar Jar owe life debts to one of the other protagonists in response to their own lives being saved (Han for Chewie, Qui-Gon for Jar Jar). However, the similarities end there; Chewie is a tough, stoic, dependable, GentleGiant who only communicates with growls and only occasionally serves as comic relief, whereas Jar Jar is an outright PluckyComicRelief shoe-in who never shuts up and proves to be an utter liability throughout the whole adventure.

In addition, Chewbacca was created with make-up and practical effects work, whereas Jar Jar was created to show off (what was at the time) revolutionary SerkisFolk CGI technology.

* BigEater: Like Chewbacca in the Original Trilogy, Jar Jar can be easily distracted by food, which often gets him in trouble. He tries to eat a snack at a Mos Espa dealership without paying, then accidentally spits it onto Sebulba, almost resulting in Jar Jar being pulped into orange goo by the enraged Dug. Later, he uses his long tongue to snatch fruit at Shmi's dinner table, much to everyone's ([[SuperFlyReflexes especially]] [[TheStraightMan Qui-Gon's]]) bemusement.

* ChekhovsGunman: Surprisingly, he plays this role in the first two episodes of the Prequel Trilogy, often influencing the plot in subtle, indirect ways. For one example, in a private conversation with Queen Amidala, he mentions the Gungans' grand army. This spurs Padme to return to their home planet and finally make peace with Boss Nass so that they may join forces against the Trade Federation's occupation. Then there's his advocation for the Senate to grant Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers, which doesn't end nearly as well for anyone.

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Downplayed as there is no one who truly detests him. But almost every character he has been put on a team with has expressed their dismay about his quirks. The sole exceptions are a few other Gungans, the Bardottans who trust and respect him, Queen Julia who's been completely wooed by his -- as Master Yoda put it -- "innocence of a child", and later the children who he entertains once he becomes a street performer. Other characters like Padmé, Obi-Wan and Anakin may usually show uncertainty and skepticism about his competence, but also treat him kindly and also usually they are impressed by his bravery and helpfulness which earns him more respect from them.

* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Although he is the most prominent Gungan character, a cursory glance at the rest of Otoh Gunga shows that Jar Jar is pretty goofy, even by their standards. Compared to his buddy Tarpals, Jar Jar has longer eyestalks which stretch out comically whenever he's shocked or scared.
* OddFriendship: Ever since Qui-Gon saved his life from a Trade Federation tank, Jar Jar clung tightly to the Jedi Master due to the Gungans' ancient life debt custom. Although Qui-Gon is visibly annoyed by Jar Jar at many points, he still sees value in Jar Jar when nobody else does and allows him to accompany him on most parts of their journey, including to Mos Espa, where even Obi-Wan didn't venture. A wise, stoic Jedi Master and a bumbling, chatterbox Gungan isn't the likeliest duo you'll ever see in the galaxy.

* UncleTomfoolery: Jar Jar Binks is accused of resembling black caricatures in minstrel shows and early American cinema, highlighting his Jamaican-like accent, clumsiness, naivety and shuffling gait, and being cowardly all typical traits of minstrel characters. It does not help physically, he has large nostrils and his "lips" make up half of his face, both traits commonly exaggerated in black caricatures also his large floppy ears have been compared to dreadlocks. Jar-Jar's first lines in the series, "Mee-sa your humble servant," call slavery and domestic servitude to mind.

* CorruptPolitician: Utilized his connections and wealth to exert influence over the Republic's bureaucracy and had a large number of other politicians, judges, and lobbyists on his payroll. He notably used his influence to halt Tan Divo's efforts to root out crime and corruption on Coruscant, which Moe was profiting off of.

He sides with the Trade Federation representatives against Padme's calls for action against the illegal blockade of Naboo. He notably used his influence to halt Tan Divo's efforts to root out crime and corruption on Coruscant, which Moe was profiting off of.

Added DiffLines:

* ObstructiveBureaucrat: Alongside the Trade Federation representatives, he embodies the stifling bureaucracy that cripples the Republic's effectiveness at solving any serious situation.

Eventually, his collaboration with the slavers was discovered by Republic officials and he was arrested on a charge of corruption, also losing his position as senator. His private army fell into the hands of Blood Dawn slavers on Er'Kit, which would be demolished by Saponza's Gang during the Galactic Civil War.
