* AllForNothing: Once the company realizes that the Promised Land that they've been looking for doesn't exist they immediately loose their cool as they were planning to build Neo Midgar in that place.
* ArcVillain: They act as the initial antagonists of ''Final Fantasy VII'' within Midgar, until Sephiroth puts a sword through President Shinra's gut and the narrative turns attention to his schemes and the party leaves Midgar to pursue him.

However in a larger sense, the grief of every major character can be traced back to them, which, while a different game, is best-shown in ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIIRebirth Rebirh]]'''s Shrine of Trials where they relive these events:
** Cloud and Tifa [[spoiler: had their homedown of Nibelheim burned to the ground by Sephiroth because Shinra lied about his creation, and he also kills Tifa's father]].
** Cloud [[spoiler: had his close friend, Zack Fair, gunned down despite being a victim of circumstance in the Nibelheim incident, hurting Cloud so powerfully he blocks the event from his memory entirely]].
** Both Red XIII and Aerith [[spoiler: were Shinra's captive test subjects, Red taken from his home as a young teen, and while Aerith escaped as a child, her mother died in the process]].
** Barret [[spoiler: has his hometown of North Corel destroyed by Shinra to cover up its Mako Reactor explodiing, and he loses his arm and best friend in the process]].
** Yuffie is the odd one out, as her moment in ''Rebirth'' was not in the original ''Final Fantasy VII'', but considering [[spoiler: the Whispers only prevent Yuffie from entering Seventh Heaven and meeting Barret and Tifa too early in Episode: [=INTERmission=]]], it's possible a version of her event, [[spoiler: Sonon being killed by Nero in the Shinra Building]], did in fact happen in the original continuity.
** Cid [[spoiler: was helming Shinra's space program before its funding was cut after he delays the launch for safety reasons, destroying his dream of going to space]].
** Vincent [[spoiler: was shot and experimented on by Hojo after he objects to the use of human test subjects in the Jenova project, resulting in his nightmarish transformations]].

* BigBadWannabe: They're the lesser of the two threats and Sephiroth is eventually the last threat AVALANCHE has to face to save the planet.
* CorporateWarfare: Shinra has a private army consisting of various types of military troopers, genetically-augmented SOLDIER members, and a wide array of robots and mecha.

planet. This only makes them a wannabe in comparison to Sephiroth, however: they are still ''plenty'' dangerous all on their own.
* CorporateWarfare: Shinra has a private army consisting of various types of military troopers, genetically-augmented SOLDIER members, and a wide array of robots and mecha. Remember, they're supposed to be an ''electric power company''.

* ShadowArchetype: She has a GuiltComplex like Vincent, but aside from reviving Vincent with the Protomateria, she always tries to run away from her guilt in some way, as shown when she chooses Hojo over Vincent because she accidentally got Vincent's father killed. By the time of the present, she seals herself away because she can't deal with the consequences of her actions, especially with her son Sephiroth. Vincent himself nearly fell into the same trap, but admits the party inspired him to keep fighting to fix his mistakes instead of rotting away in a coffin.

* LackOfEmpathy: When Angeal points out [[spoiler:his mother, Gillian, killed herself out of shame for her role in Project G, Hollander scoffs at this and retorts that she should have been proud to be the namesake of the project]].

* FauxAffablyEvil: Downplayed. He's usually dismissive towards people he considers irrelevant for his experiments. If someone does manage to prove useful for his experiments, he'll speak in a friendlier tone and even drop some compliments, as shown when he uses [[TheAce Zack]] to test his experimental monsters. He's still a sociopath who doesn't lose any sleep over the suffering and death of his test subjects.

* HateSink: Not ''quite'' as despicable as Hojo, but still clearly intended as less cool and sympathetic than Genesis. He's even jealous of ''Hojo'' and is ultimately, while clever himself, not even as smart as his rival whom himself is an inferior scientist to Professor Gast. Hollander is a dick that frustrates the player and his death is meant to be cathartic.

* StrongerThanTheyLook: She's a BadassNormal with no enhancements to speak of, and a rookie recruit to the Turks at that. And yet if you mess up at the Icicle Inn, she can ''lay [[SuperSoldier Cloud]] out flat'' into unconsciousness with a solid punch to the face.
