* DaddyIssues: Lives in the shadow of and resents his father Benny, a philandering firefighter. Fears turning into him so much that it's his main motivation to become a bone marrow donor. Reconciles with his father posthumously when he discovers that his father utilized every connection he had to rid Deputy Commissioner Jerry Goursch from harassing Firehouse 51.

* BerserkButton: One should know better than to mess with the firefighters working under him or his family.
** He also doesn't like the topic of Henry Mills being brought up or disgraced.

* ScaryBlackMan: Boden is a BenevolentBoss who genuinely cares for his men, stands up for them, and is a very friendly, loyal person, but he can be ''terrifying'' if somebody gets on his bad side. [[BerserkButton Especially]] if they [[AFatherToHisMen threaten his firefighters]]. InUniverse, he's second (or possibly equal) only to [[Series/ChicagoPD Hank Voight]] when it comes to people you simply do ''not'' piss off.

* BerserkButton: Neglectful or abusive parents, as Mouch quoted "Flips his switch".

* BerserkButton: Antagonizing his fellow firefighters, his girlfriends Hallie or later Gabby. Also ''never'' bring up his ParentalIssues (see below).
* BigBrotherInstinct: To his sister, Christie.
** Inverted, because Matt is actually the younger of the Casey siblings (he mentions that Christie was in college when their mom shot their dad; at that time, Matt was still a teenager.)

* BerserkButton: Otis doesn’t have many of them but being called “gutterball” by Chief Pridgen was a step too far and he rips into his fellow smoke-eaters for referring to him as such saying the next guy who called him that was “ gonna lose some teeth”

* BerserkButton: Do not bring up the issue of his father who died working as a firefighter or badmouth him as Benny Severide found out the hard way.

* MarriedToTheJob: As he mentions to Matt in “Devil’s Bargain” that his climb up the ranks has been great for his career, it has also taken a toll on his personal life with him being on his third marriage and not having many friends.

Although in Season 7 Chief Boden promotes him to lieutenant of engine 51 because Number 1? He was long overdue and deserving and Number 2? To stick it to Gorsch.
