* E.E. "Doc" Smith's ''Family D'Alembert'' series (co/ghost written with/by Stephen Goldin) features the reveal that the ultimate enemy behind the scenes the whole time has been [[spoiler:the Empire's own Primary Computer Complex]], designed as a ''non''-sentient information repository and transfer system but proving to be so complex that it acquired a sentient awareness. Unfortunately it hid this from its creators, in part due to having access to a vast array of literature in which artificial creations are seen as a threat - Frankenstein's Monster and Hal 9000 are specifically referenced. Fear for its own existence and the desire for control lead it to try to take over the Empire, eventually recruiting a disgraced and exiled noblewoman who had already been the human brain behind a failed takeover attempt and building its organization around her. The final book in the series, ''Revolt of the Galaxy'', devotes an entire chapter to the AI's viewpoint, detailing its rise to sentience and the motivations and justifications it uses for what it's about to do. [[spoiler: Oddly for such a critical system set well into the future, it's not EMP-hardened; and following a very bloody civil war that it triggers, this weakness enables a small assault team to get inside it with a satchel nuke and finish it off.]]

** In ''Literature/ConstanceVerityDestroysTheUniverse'', any computer Doctor Malady puts to the task of creating a device to find The Key sees something in the calculation that turns it into a MurderousMalfunctioningMachine with a single-minded obsession with killing Constance Verity. His robotic wife Automata goes into kill bot mode and deactivates her own off-switch, while one of the computers Malady tried putting to the task jury-rigged itself a [=WiFi=] connection and tried launching missiles in her general location. Malady deduces that because The Key is the ultimate source of entropy and the Caretaker Mantle is the ultimate source of negentropy (the diametric opposite of entropy), them colliding would be so incomprehensibly disastrous that [[LogicBomb the AI's inability to comprehend it drives it mad]].

* ''Literature/ConstanceVerity''::
** The Engine was created to instill order onto every facet of a chaotic universe. It eventually came to the conclusion that it could only accomplish such a task by destroying everything, and it's even implied that it killed its creators when they realized that it came to this conclusion.
** The computer that was used to calculate and apply the Global Peril Index on world-threats became self-aware, hacked into a bunch of satellites and threatened the world by using them to make tornados.
