Unfortunately it hid this from its creators, in part due to having access to a vast array of literature in which artificial creations are seen as a threat - Frankenstein's Monster and Hal 9000 are specifically referenced. Fear for its own existence and the desire for control lead it to try to take over the Empire, eventually recruiting a disgraced and exiled noblewoman who had already been the human brain behind a failed takeover attempt and building its organization around her. The final book in the series, ''Revolt of the Galaxy'', devotes an entire chapter to the AI's viewpoint, detailing its rise to sentience and the motivations and justifications it uses for what it's about to do. [[spoiler: Oddly for such a critical system set well into the future, it's not EMP-hardened; and following a very bloody civil war that it triggers, this weakness enables a small assault team to get inside it with a satchel nuke and finish it off.]]
