Growing Up Sucks: Charmeleon to Togepi

day 130 ash's charmander evolves into charmeleon {ep43}

When you think about it, the way Char acts after he evolves is really kind of depressing. The snide, I'm too cool to listen, screw you guys attitude didn't come from just anywhere, and it has nothing to do with Ash considering how well they got along. No, he's probably copying how Damian used to act around him as a sign of strength, as a sort of metaphor for an abusee becoming an abuser... just something to think on. Also Misty dresses like a stripper during this episode, well more than the mini-shorts and overalls do to her already (44) has Ash and company + TR help a paras to evolve... skip. (2013) Just want to point out that at this point time and space lose all context for the forseeable future, as Ash channels Ryoga from {{Ranma 1/2}}.

day 156 the gang meets jigglypuff {ep45}

Ok, these MAP SHENANAGINS go way beyond Ash teleporting to Vermillion without an abra, or getting back on the road to Saffron so quickly after being shipwrecked, Ash Ketchum meets Jigglypuff in an oasis on the outskirts of Poké-Las Vegas which like its real-world counterpoint is in a desert. THERE IS NO DESERT IN KANTO! AT ALL, NOT EVEN A LITTLE SAND! There's a desert in Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova... heck the entire country of Orre is a desert... but there ain't one anywhere on the Kanto-Johto landmass. Ash Ketchum, ladies and gentlemen, only he could get lost enough to discover new geography. (2013) TR dress up like rockstars this episode and do the song version of the motto for the first time... just wanted to point that out.

day 163 ash's charmeleon evolves into charizard, ash finds a poke egg {ep46}

Only 3 eps! No wonder I don't remember charmeleon that well. 3 things, one Gary, along with everyone that isn't Ash, Misty, or Brock dismiss the Aerodactyl that goes on a rampage after being awakened as being a nightmare from jigglypuff's sleep song... any guesses as to which particular Pokémon, Prof. Gary Oak will study extensively first?

The other things are that Charizard, regardless of why he contracted SADS (Sudden Asshole Dick Syndrome) still cares about Ash's well being, saving his life twice, and lastly even fully evolved and ready to beat the tar out of anything, he never screws with the mouse. He certainly knows the pecking order.

(47) is a random filler where the whole crew helps out at a hospital, it's meh quality at best, a couple of laughs here and there, the doctor is voiced by Crocodile from One Piece, I'm not sure why Ash trusts him. Skipping ahead to (49) same thing random filler but with more farfetch'd not bad, but not noteworthy, now back to (48)

It's the James' episode people, with his rich kid past and that dominatrix bitch of a fiancee that makes Jessie look normal by comparison, Ohma gerd all of the shipping fodder, I likes it. Random trivia time, fanfiction dates back to Sherlock Holmes, modern fandom dates back to Star Wars/Trek, and speaking of Trek Kirk/Spock fic was where the term slash originated from... but it was Pokémon my friends that gave the Internet the term shipping, the original reference being of course to Rocketshipping a.k.a the Jessie/James pairing. Incidentally every (in)conceivable pairing in Pokémon has a corresponding –shipping name to match the theme as can be seen here for those curious... http://shipping.bulbagarden.net/listaz.html

(2013) Why didn't James take his growlithe with him? His parents don't even like the dog, yet he tells Growlie to stay behind and look after them instead of acquiring some loyal firepower for TR? It just doesn't make any sense.

day 184 the egg hatches into togepi, and misty becomes a mom {ep50}

Ok, so the dad has the egg, and the surrogate uncle takes care of the pregnancy, and all the mom does is show up after the laborious birth is over with and the baby instantly loves it... man Togepi's pre hatched life is all backwards and stuff. I also like how from the outset, Pikachu is the designated “make sure Togepi's curiosity doesn't kill her” protector guy... there's usually a funny background situation in every ep that shows Pikachu enduring great pain to guard her from here on. (2013) I kinda feel bad for Meowth, I mean sure he kidnapped Togepi, but he did genuinely care about her. That counts for something right?

Next Time... "That one strech of episodes where nothing interesting happens but are so bland and unassuming I can't come up with an insulting epithet. With special guest cameo, Todd Snap." Eps 51-60

I believe he wanted to spare Growlie his harsh, criminal life. Although why he left him in the first place is still up for debate.
