Thom is in the middle of forging a blackmail letter when Mat comes in and tells him what happened, though he’s still Locked Out of the Loop and doesn’t know about Perrin and Rand. He wants to leave the city, but Thom convinces him to stay until the morning, hoping he’ll decide not to go by then.
Another of those chapters that’s largely an excuse to remind us what’s already happened, though we do get a quite intriguing tease of Thom’s backstory, as the reason he joined these guys in the first place was to pay back an old debt to the Aes Sedai. Of course, we may well have been told what it is near the beginning and I’ve just forgotten by now. And I’ve got nothing on the letter he’s writing to make trouble between a High Lord and his wife, but it certainly seems like he’ll be having a bigger role this time.
