Chapter 27: Within the Ways

Perrin reflects on how Zarine has become an even bigger bitch, this time beating the crap out of him until he made her stop. They reach the Waygate, but are ambushed by Trollocs. This includes a Crowning Moment Of Awesome for Perrin as he smashes a Fade’s skull in with his sledgehammer, but unfortunately it also cements Zarine as a Creator's Pet when she’s the only one to come through the fight unscathed.

After Loial locks the gate from outside, and Zarine cleans Perrin’s wounds in a bit that does nothing to erase the earlier stuff, there’s a bunch of crows like in book one, and Perrin also can’t find any wolves to contact.

There’s a lot of good stuff here, and the fight at the gate is very suspenseful and scary, but unfortunately we also have to deal with Zarine as the millstone around this whole subplot. She has yet to serve any real purpose to the story, so she just seems to be here to annoy us. And I’m honestly not sure how much we’re supposed to like her, but I have the sinking feeling that we are supposed to.

I don't think the reader was supposed to like her by this point. Soon, but not yet.
