Chapter 26: The Dedicated

Rand’s visions go further back, showing that shortly after the Breaking the Aiel were sent into the desert by the Aes Sedai with several objects that they needed to keep safe, some of which had to be abandoned. And then things really get interesting when going further back we’re suddenly in a sci-fi world. It goes all the way back to the actual Breaking, by which time Muradin has clawed his eyes out and disappeared.

Rand then finds Mat hanged on the tree, and is barely able to save him. When they try to leave, there’s a High Octane Nightmare Fuel fight with dust monsters who Rand beats by pulling a tornado spell out of his ass, and luckily they don’t follow them out of the city.

Well, this was certainly unexpected. It’s like if the big reveal of Yor The Hunter From The Future hadn’t been spoiled by the title. Suddenly our understanding of this world is completely turned on its head, even if it’s still unclear exactly why Rand had to learn all this. And the dust monster fight is very effective as well, plunging us right back into the main story, though I would like to get back to Perrin or Elayne’s stories for a bit now.

The description of the pre-Breaking soldier's helmet is reminiscent of the Seanchan design. Which has no real relevance to anything plotwise, just a nice link to modern times.
