I already made one attempt at this chapter, and then lost my liveblog about halfway through. And since I don't want to re-write it all, I'll give you the cliff-notes version.

In short. Shadowstep's upgrade is cool and fulfilled all expectations I had of him experiencing lots and lots of pain. Silvertongue was cool and creepy as well. however, I think his stated motivation of doing it to give him a chance of surviving his punishment is pretty darn stupid considering how much of a deal he made out of how rare that metal is. That's even worse than just killing him for the failure. Actually, at this point, killing Shadowstep for failure wouldn't be all that bad. Anyways, ff there's not more to it than that, I'm forever banishing him to the frigid ninth circle of villain-hell. Shared by such illustrious examples as Team Rocket and Anakin Skywalker.

As of right now, Shadowstep is in a gross place that stinks a lot and is gross with lots of dead bodies around, and he's being attacked from behind by something magical. Something very much like a zombie unicorn.

Surrounded by dead bodies, zombie unicorn. Oh Shit.

He gets attacked by a pega-zombie, and takes the hit on his wing. His new metal wing. His new metal wings where each individual feather is a blade. I demand Shadowstep be re-named Edward Scissor-feathers.

And he's finally starting to get a sense of just how awesome his upgrade really is. >:D

His magic-reflecting metal wings where every feather is a blade.

Shadowstep spoke aloud in response, “If this is my punishment, milord, to slaughter these... abominations, then I am thankful you granted me such a gift.” His grin turned into a smug smirk, “Otherwise I might have to break a sweat. I shall return soon enough to slaughter the Chronomancer.”
Oh Shadowstep, how can you be so Genre Savvy one moment and so stupid the next?

What did I say about being surrounded by dead bodies when there's zombie-ponies around? Called it!

Oh, looks like they're not the shambling sort of zombies either. These guys are fast. Sort of.

SS retreats. Silvertongue punishes him for it by turning off his wings. Good luck with that Shadowstep.

He flexed his wings around him and crushed them against the thing’s head, splattering himself with blood and rancid gore as it slumped forward on top of him. He fought the urge to vomit.
I wonder if you can catch the zombie by getting zombie goo in your open wounds. At the very least, he should take a good lysol bath and course of antibiotics when he gets home.

And he goes down under a writhing hoard of zombie-pones. And despite this line;

And that was the last thing that flashed before his eyes.
I doubt he's been truly exterminated. The likelihood of him becoming a zombie-pone himself has crossed my mind, but that would be stupid and boring. Maybe if he was somehow able to become an intelligent undead... I don't know. That's still iffy.

We change scenes to Silvertongue.

No, Silvertongue’s eyes were focused in the center of the room, were a large platform had been raised. He approached it with curiosity and anxious anticipation, ecstatic to see the fruit of his labors firsthand, to see what his mad science and his forbidden magics had wrought. On the platform were six large containers, made of an enchanted glass that would resist and contain some of the most powerful magicks known to ponykind. Each one was connected to a series of cables and levers and machines to monitor the contents of these containers, and that was what gave Silvertongue such eager elation.
Okay, this has something to do with the mane six.

“Ja, zank you,” Blutsauger smiled with pride, “It vas easy to get zee genetic material I required; I vas able to convince zem to come in for a physical and... heh... blood-vork. Pure samples are much better zan possibly tainted ones from zee immunization needles. Zee more I have to vork vis, zee better vork I can do, ja?”
EVIL CLONES! I WAS RIGHT!

Now, in my running theory, the mere existence of these evil clones is enough to doom at least one world to destruction unless they are killed. If the mane six go home, chaos in this world is increased because they're not there to balance out the evil six. If they don't go home but stay away, balance is maintained in this world, but Discord eats their home.

Oh crap, these clones are going to have their memories? That's gonna get nasty.

Looks like this process is going to weaken Nihila for a while too. Giving Silvertongue free reign to do whatever he wants. I still wonder if he's the betraying type.

I forget, was this plan his idea or Nihila's?

“Right, now zen... ah... ven you give zee vord, Herr Silvertongue, I vill begin zee energy transfer. Zis is mein first time doing zis precise process, but it should not be much different zan any of zee ozer times I have done zis sort of zing, ja? Sure it’s not bringing zee dead back to life, but it is a similar concept.”
Huh, it would be interesting if one side-effect of this was Shadowstep somehow coming back. Of course, that would also seal my opinion of Silvertongue being a moron if it happened unintentionally.

Wait, is Blatsauger supposed to be Photo Finish's expy?

Elements of Discord. I wonder how similar they're going to be to the mane six when they were discorded. Either way, this is gonna be cool.

Ooh, pallet reversal for Applejack. I think. It could just be a pallet swap, but I think it's a reversal.

Uh oh. Something's up with Twilight's dark magic infusion. Uncontrolled magical backlash that the machines can't pinpoint the source of? Definitely something to do with her element. I wonder if this is going to have something to do with her eventual defeat? Or else it's just to show how strong she is. Who knows?

I really like the scene where she starts breaking the mana-glass though.

Silvertongue glared at the Doctor, “Stop? When we are so close? We are only a few short moments away from bestowing life upon the most powerful mortal creature in this world, and you want to stop? Get back to your station, you miserable little foal and keep her lifelines stable. I am not about to end this just because you are a pathetic coward.”
Spoken like a true mad scientist!

And even unconsious and not technically alive, Twilight strikes a crippling blow to Silvertongue, taking his eye. I get the feeling that this Twilight is going to be extraordinarily evil and not very much like discorded Twi.

And now it's finished. Let's see what manner of abominations you have wrought Silvertongue.

I don't buy how easily Silvertongue is brushing aside the loss of his eye.

Her coat was purple, a deep dark purple, not at all the bright and colorful lavender of her original form. Her mane was colored bright pinks and purples, and seemed to have a natural bounce and curl to it. Her body tone did not seem to be altered in any way physically, which would make sense seeing as she, too, would be the Element of Magic. This mare, she was perfect. She was just as powerful as her Harmony counterpart, but without those annoying things like ‘self-control’, ‘compassion’, or ‘friendship’, that prevented her from using that power for personal gain and for destruction.

The mare’s eyes slowly fluttered open.

“Rise and shine, little one...”

That's a good way to end a chapter. >:D

=D You seemed to give this chapter nothing but praise, which I think we all expected. Just wait until Chapter 9, where you get to see them in action - easily one of the best chapters in the fic.

I must admit that you're right that if Silvertongue was telling the truth, he would have been being an idiot with Shadowstep, but we later discover that he was lying and knew exactly what he was doing.

The plan was Silvertongue's idea.

"Wait, is Blatsauger supposed to be Photo Finish's expy?"

I don't think so.

"Elements of Discord. I wonder how similar they're going to be to the mane six when they were discorded. Either way, this is gonna be cool. "

Only one is really a lot like her discorded version, with two others being similar. In general, they're more competant though.

"I get the feeling that this Twilight is going to be extraordinarily evil and not very much like discorded Twi."

Oh, just you wait!

"I don't buy how easily Silvertongue is brushing aside the loss of his eye."

I must admit that that stretches my Willing Suspension Of Disbelief a bit. Eye Scream can actually kill you from the shock!

But yeah. You finally know about some of the most fun characters in the fic. Wait till chapter 9 where yo get to know them.

as to the eye, well you find out later just how much mental discipline he has instilled in himself over the years, it makes sense he can ignore it.
