Chapter 13: Punishments

After Egwene and Elayne are able to talk through a hole in the wall about wanting to fight their way out rather than being stilled, the two of them and Nynaeve are brought to Siuan. After an amusing bit where Faolain lies about how difficult Egwene was, which just gets her garden chores for not watching her well enough, Siuan reveals that Liandrin and a bunch of other Black Ajah have already left, after stealing some magical artifacts and killing several people. And Verin’s refusal to explain was because everyone is so freaked out about the Black Ajah that the slightest inference that they had something to do with Liandrin will only hurt them. And the world makes sense again.

In other news, Morgase is furious with the Aes Sedai and wants all of her children home as soon as possible, but Siuan intends to hold on to them. And Egwene and Elayne are being made Accepted due to their increased power, along with being sentenced to kitchen duty to mitigate how upset people might be about it. And we end on the cliffhanger of Siuan having more to say to just Egwene and Nynaeve. I’m all ears, after this.

For a chapter that’s really just more exposition, this really gets this side of the story going. The girls are now in a much more complex position, and Siuan shows her worth as a Guile Hero, making me even more excited about her induction as a viewpoint character. And the promise that there’s more to come that Elayne shouldn’t hear really has me engaged further. It took a while, but the book’s finally going full steam ahead.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, this book doesn't actually start until chapter 9. If this book had used the prologue format the later books use, then the first bunch of chapters would probably have been shortened and stuck in there, as well as the one where the girls are still travelling.
