This time the person at the door is Selene. Now there’s one I didn’t see coming. She says a bunch of stuff about how the Aes Sedai want to use Mat, and sent back his father and Tam when they came asking about their sons, and it’s all obvious BS. But he still thinks leaving would be a good idea, until Siuan comes to see him. Since only he can use the Horn until he dies, they want to keep him safe until he can do it at the Last Battle, and for now that means keeping him in the city. But he’s at work figuring a way out of this after they leave, so there’s another complication for the girls.
Selene continues to be rather obviously up to no good, but Mat shows how much he’s improved by refusing to take her word for anything as much as Siuan’s. He knows they both probably have ulterior motives, and we leave him considering how he can be rid of both. And now it seems the heavy exposition for this subplot is all out there, so it can get up to speed with the others.
