Chapter 10: Secrets

Finally, we catch up with the girls plus Mat and Hurin. As they approach Tar Valon, Hurin is trying to hide his abilities since the Aes Sedai might want to gentle him, while Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne have their own problems with what might happen if anyone knew about the kind of power they discovered they had at Falme. Egwene also gets Nynaeve off her back by inviting her to think about how Lan’s getting on with Moiraine, which marks the first time I’ve ever found that romance tolerable.

They’re confronted by none other than Dain Bornhald, who’s even more pissed off at his father’s supposed death (I’m still expecting he’ll come back). Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne are too worried about Mat to be delayed, so they bust out their powers, which just pisses off Verin as she could have easily talked their way around. Now there’s how you write flawed heroes who are still likable.

Here we get more reminders of what happened before, but they go down a lot easier and are quickly over so we can get to new stuff. And pretty good stuff too, as the girls are in quite a precarious situation with no easy answers. Dain now seems to be degraded to Goldfish Poop Gang level, but hey, I thought that about Fain for a while too.

I rather enjoyed this part of Lan and Nynaeve's relationship building. Well, maybe not so much enjoyed it as I wasn't annoyed by it. It gets better, though.
