Flattery will get you nowhere with me, Guile.

He says he will smash my pretty little head in! He thinks I'm pretty! What a swell guy. Still, he had to get owned, because he attacked Ogma and pals.

Chapter 4 - Joy and Sorrow: Finished.

Base: Talking yields only one support talk with party members. Warren and Lyra (1) involves Lyra learning of Warren's rather isolationist lifestyle. Marth and Lyra (1) happened, but Marth isn't a party member this run, so those aren't important, while the others are just chapter info ones. How's Everyone yields nothing, and no inventory stuff happened, so the fight begins!

Marth: Visits both villages, receiving a Shaver tome and the assistance of Castor (who will not be joining the party, sadly). He then seized once all pirates were dealt with.

Ogma, Sirius, Yubello, & Yumina: Held out at the top area, Ogma recruited Sirius and held off foes for a bit, while Sirius dispatched a thief, and then took over the defense of the bridge.

Party: Warren detours to take care of a thief threatening the village holding the Shaver tome, while the others begin the trek around the mountain, shooting down pirates as they pass. Warren soon catches up, and everyone charges forward towards Ogma. We begin being followed by reinforcements, and so Ryan and Gordin head back to deal with them. Lyra clears out the few remaining people harassing Sirius, and Warren heads south, towards Guile.

Guile: Defeated by Warren after a couple rounds of steel bow arrows to the gut. Not too threatening, although him having a ranged option means I respect him as a foe.

Afterwards: Caeda appears, noting that Altea has been attacked! Oh dear.

Up Next: Liberation of Grust, where we get a sneak peek at a new party member, meet another old war buddy, and recruit a relatively useless thief.

I never used Julian in SD, so I tried him here and was surprised at how good he was. According to serenesforest, Rickard's growths are still good, but not nearly as good as Julian's. Besides, we might not need two thieves on our team. So, you might be right about his uselessness.

Growth rates seem to be much better than in SD. In fact, growth rates in general seem to have gradually gone up in series' history. Not that it matters, since enemies are also stronger.
