Go To

Hello all, today we're headed for the Tower of Babil. To start, we head for the bottom floors of the Dwarven Castle, as there's a back door here that puts us on the path between the castle and the tower. There's only one way to go from here.

As we approach the tower, Giott's tanks start firing at it. We head in. Ice elemental enemies was the theme for Zot, and here, it's fire. Ice is the only weakness any enemies have, and we get a lot of ice equipment to ward all the fire off. We start on B13, and after grabbing some Ice Arrows, go up to B12.

B12 starts by handing us a Green Beret, which is a bit better than the current headgear I have on my mages. It goes to Rydia. We also find an Icebrand for Cecil and an Ice Lance for Kain, both guarded by a Security Eye. Security Eyes don't do anything until you attack, at which point they summon a monster in. Then they start using Beam, which deals damage equal to 10% of the target's max HP.

On to B11, which starts by giving us Cat Claws. These can inflict Sleep and up Yang's Attack a little bit. Rosa learns Shell on the way to her next equipment upgrade, the Killer Bow.

B10 has the first save point of the dungeon. We also find an Ice Armor and Ice Shield. Kain gets one and Cecil the other, so now they both resist both fire and ice.

B9 has little of note, except for a locked door. Rosa learns Curaga and Mini while headed for the next floor.

We can't explore much of B8, so we head right to B7. There's another save point here. We make 2 saves. I'll explain why later.

On B6, we encounter two people talking.

Doctor: Have a safe trip, Master Rubicante.

Rubicante: Not to worry. Eblan has been decimated along with its ninjas. Take care of things until I return.

Rubicante teleports away. The doctor does a little dance.

Doctor: Heh heh! Golbez and Rubicante are gone! I'm in charge now!

Rydia: What's with him?

Rosa: Shhh.

Doctor: Who's there!?

Way to blow our cover, ladies.

Doctor: Cecil! How did you get up here!?

Kain: Caught you at a bad time, eh? With Rubicante away, what are you going to do?

Doctor: How dare you disrespect me! I may not be an elemental archfiend, but I, Dr. Lugae, am the brains of Golbez's operation! On my honour, I will protect this tower!

Kain: That's a laugh!

Yeah, this is a fantasy setting. You can't science us to death here.

Dr. Lugae: I've heard enough out of you! My great creation will shut you up soon enough!

We now have to fight the Doctor and his robot Barnabas.

Dr. Lugae: Barnabas, attack!

Barnabas: Grrr!

Barnabas hits the Doctor. This should be easy.

Dr. Lugae: Yeow! You big oaf! Over there! Beat 'em up!

Barnabas: Grrr!

Dr. Lugae: Show no mercy!

We target Barnabas. He falls easily.

Dr. Lugae: My baby! You've left me no choice! I'll control him myself!

The two combine into Barnabas-Z. Still easy.

Dr. Lugae: You fools...! Face my true evil! No more games!

He can now use various status effects on us. Sleep and Poison, no big deal.

Dr. Lugae: Transform!

Then he turns into a mecha-skeletion-missle launcher thing. He's now got Beam and Laser, the latter of which can hurt. He's still not really a threat. We get Lugae's Key for winning.

Dr. Lugae: You're too late. The Tower connects the Underworld to the Overworld. Rubicante has already taken the Crystals to the surface. The dwarves will be annihilated with my cannons! Victory is mine! Mwahahaha!

And he dies. We better go stop those cannons.

We head to the locked door on B9 and use Lugae's Key.

Hahaha! Killing dwarves is fun!

I'll take your word for it.

Cecil: You cowards!

You! How did you get in here!? Kill them!

The controllers, three Goblin Captains, attack us. You'd think they'd get monsters that actually pose a threat to us, but no.

Ugh... D-destroy the controls!

The controls get absolutely wrecked.

Nothing can stop the cannons now!

Wouldn't that just stop the cannons from working? They die.

Cecil: !

Kain: Dammit!

Yang steps forward.

Cecil: Yang!

Rosa: What are you doing!?

Yang: Leave this to me! Go! Get out of here!

Rydia: No!

Cecil: It's going to explode!

Yang: Go now!

He punches the four of us out.

Cecil: Yang!

Yang: Cecil, everyone, I thank you. I have enjoyed travelling with you all.

Kain: Open the door!

Rydia: Yang!

Rosa: Please don't do this!

Yang: Tell my wife... ...I will always be with her.

Cecil: Yang!!!

Yang: Farewell.

The room explodes.

Cecil: Yang!

We can't get back in. Nothing to do but leave, I guess. Rosa learns Dispel on the way down.

As we try to leave, Golbez's theme starts up again.

You never cease to amuse me...

Cecil: Golbez!

Golbez: When the cat is away, the mice will play, hmm...? But the game ends now.

The bridge out starts collapsing! Just in time though, the Enterprise flies up and gets us!

???: Whoa! Doesn't get closer than that!

Rosa: Cid!

Cid: Where's Yang?

He kinda exploded. Let's just hope nobody else explodes, OK?

Cid: ...We've lost another good man. And who is she?

Cecil: Rydia. She's a summoner from Mist.

We hear something flying up to us.

Cid: Damn! They're still on me!

We try to fly away from the Red Wings ship following us.

Kain: Can we lose them!?

Cid: I don't know. They've definitely upgraded the Red Wings.

Rydia: They're catching up!

Cid: Come on, baby, you can do it!

No luck.

Cid: The engine's not gonna last! Cecil, take over!

Cid walks to the edge of the ship.

Rosa: Cid!

Cecil: Where are you going?

Cid: Once we reach the surface, I'm gonna seal the entrance with this bomb!

No, no, no. No more exploding player characters.

Rosa: Cid!

Cid: Man... And I really wanted to see the cute kids you and Cecil would have together... But I can't let Yang go all alone into the afterlife! Go back to Baron and my crew will help you!

Cecil: No! There has to be another way!

Rydia: Cid, please don't!

Cid: That's Uncle Cid to you, little lady! don't you cry for me! Remember! Head for Baron immediately!

He jumps out.

Cid: Now this is what I call going out with a bang! Haw haw haw!

He blows himself up. We fly out of the hole to the Underworld just as it caves in.

Crap. Two exploded player characters in one day. Talk about bad luck.

Rosa: Cid...

Rydia: Why...?

Kain: Why does everyone choose death so quickly...?

Cecil: ...Let's head to Baron.

We'll do that next time. One more thing though... Let's load the second file. You see, if we defeat Lugae via the Barnabas-Z route, it doesn't count his first form as killed, meaning it doesn't show up in the bestiary. We can fix this though, by loading the second save, fighting him again, and killing Lugae's first form before Barnabas. You see, the Doctor needs to be around so Barnabas can stay oiled up. Without him...

Barnabas: Oil... OILLL...

And he uses Self Destruct. Nearly guaranteed to kill one of our party members (it hit Yang for 4000 damage), but now we've got a full (so far) bestiary in our main save. The reason this works is that each game in Complete Collection (FF4, Interlude and TAY) have only one bestiary each, it's shared across all save files. In fact, I can now delete the second save with no downsides.

That's all for now. Next time, we'll see what Cid's crew can do for us.

I have to agree with Kain. A lot of party members do seem to sacrifice themselves at the drop of a hat.
