{Pondering where to go next, goes east of Vermillion, and is surprised to see a familiar pile of dirt.}
Yellow: Diglett's Cave? I wonder...
- Inside Diglett's cave
"What a surprise! Digletts dug this long tunnel! It goes right to Viridian City!"
Yellow: Really? ...So there's finally a way back. And an excuse to train Squirtle and Gyarados while we're at it.
Pikachu: We must be cautious. Some of the pokemon here are very strong.
{Not too far in, the party is attacked by a level 17 Diglett}
Squirtle: You want a piece of me? Well too bad, because I'm gonna-
Gyarados: Get out of the way.
Squirtle: Yeah, get- what!?
{Gyarados defeats the Diglett.)
Pikachu: You weren't strong enough yet, but it will not be long.
Squirtle: I don't need to hear it, you little ra-
Gyarados: Only a fool would be so flippant in front of a superior!
Squirtle: (He'd better mean himself.)
{Continuing on, Squirtle grows to level 11 from participating in more battles.}
"I went to Rock Tunnel, but it's dark and scary. If a Pokemon's Flash could light it up..."
Yellow: According to my map, that's east of Cerulean. Maybe we could go there soon...
- Route 4:
Yellow: Ah, I didn't realize how much I missed this place's atmosphere!
{There is a house outside of Viridian Forest}
"I'm looking for Clefairy! Wanna trade one for Mr. Mime?"
Yellow: I don't have one.
{There is also a guard house}
Assistant: Hi! Remember me? I'm Prof. Oak's aide! If you caught 10 kinds of Pokemon, I'm supposed to give you a Flash Hm. So, Yellow! Have you caught at least 10 kinds of Pokemon?
Yellow: No.
Assistant: Oh. I see. When you get 10 kinds, come back for this.
Pikachu: I had almost forgotten that Yellow had a mission that I made him abandon...
Yellow: So we'll need to go through Rock Tunnel blind... Actually, I've got a good feeling about that.
{Yellow finds an HP up and a Moon Stone, then goes back and Cuts his way into Pewter again.}
Yellow: Well, here we are again. Pewter city, location of the toughest battle in my life.
Pikachu: Brock, the Rock leader.
Squirtle: Tch. I could've won that easily.
Pikachu: Exactly.
Squirtle: ...I don't get it.
Pikachu: Now that Yellow has other reliable Pokemon besides me, there's very little he's not prepared for.
Squirtle: (...What's that tone supposed to be?)
{Exploring town again, Yellow Cuts his way into a Museum's employee entrance.''
Receptionist: You can't sneak in the back way! Oh, whatever! Do you know what Amber is?
Yellow: No.
Receptionist: Amber is fossilized tree sap. There's a lab somewhere trying to resurrect ancient Pokemon from Amber.
Scientist: Ssh! I think that this chunk of Amber contains Pokemon DNA! It would be great if Pokemon could be resurected from it! But, my colleagues just ignore me! So, I have a favor to ask! Take this to a Pokemon Lab and get it examined!
Yellow: Alright. I'm sure to make it to Cinnibar some day.
{Yellow takes another trip through Mount Moon. Against Pokemon closer to his level, Squirtle does better, Growing to level 12}
Hiker: WHOA! You shocked me! Oh, you're just a kid!
===Battle Start===
{The hiker uses two lv 10 Geodude, and a lv 10 Onix. Squirtle defeats each of them with one Bubble attack, Growing to Lv 13, then 14}
Hiker: Wow! Shocked again!
===Battle End===
Hiker: Kids like you shouldn't be here!
Yellow: I'll be fine. I've already trashed Team Rocket's influence here.
Hiker: That wasn't what I meant. But are you sure?
{Reaching the third level again, Yellow finds the same Rocket Grunts still around.}
Yellow: You're still here?
Rocket: Did you really think we'd leave empty-handed? (Actually, these whips work against Zubat, but they won't do us much good if we trip over any Geodude. We're stuck here!)
{Yellow, of course, has no such problems with handling wild Pokemon.}
Squirtle: Got it! Now I can finally use something more intense than these wimpy bubbles!
{Squirtle reaches Level 15 and learns Water Gun.}
{Yellow makes it to Cerulean City again, and uses the Bike Voucher to buy a Bicycle.}
Yellow: Alright, let's try this out!
Pikachu: Hmm... I think this could work...
{Yellow bikes down the Route 5 slope with Pikachu balanced on the handrails.}
Yellow: What do you think, fun?
Pikachu: Pi! Yes!
Yellow: Alright. Now, let's try something...
- Saffron North Gate
Guard: I'm on guard duty. Gee, I'm thirsty, though! Oh, wait there the road's closed.
Yellow: Darn. I guess we'll need to find another path.
Guard: (The Chief probably wouldn't want it getting out that he's letting Team Rocket in, but maybe I should stop listening to him. Maybe if someone strong comes along, he could take care of things...)
- Report 5: Reporting In
- Team Rocket ??????? Base, Boss's Office
Boss: So, you're the last of our Cerulean recruits. I expected you here hours ago.
Purple: I took a little detour. (He sets a spare Hm 01 on the table.) Didn't want to show up empty handed.
Boss: Cut? I see. But it's hardly practical for battle.
Purple: From what I've seen of the average grunt, they need all the help they can get.
Boss: ...Hmm. You don't think much of my men. I suppose that's reasonable, considering I have all my best on critical assignments at the moment. But make no mistake, the ones you've been able to meet were not selected for strength.
Purple: Ah. I was worried for a while, there. Now, let's figure out how it's gonna be. I've been catching a lot of Pokemon that I don't need. You've picked up all kinds of species in your operations. Let me borrow them for a few minutes each, and I pay you back with interest.
Boss: A seemingly reasonable arrangement, however... I don't know you can be trusted not to run off. And you were offered a job as my agent, not a useful freelancer.
Purple: Heh, sorry, but Black and Red just aren't my colors. Aside from that, though, I'm fine with working for you... in secret.
Boss: I suppose there's only one deciding factor left. I was told you had some strength. I'll test that for myself!
===Battle Start===
{And so it began...}
Fearow: What is this...? The enemy trainer is...
Purple: Fearow, Fury Attack!
{A battle unlike any Purple had ever experienced}
Boss: (Onix, crush them! Rock Throw!)
{At first, it didn't seem so.}
Purple: Sandshrew, Slash attack!
Sandshrew: Purple can't feel it, but he has...
{The battle began in the Rocket Boss's favor}
Purple: Now it's your turn. Shellder, Clamp!
Shellder: Nearly absolute command...
{Purple eventually turned the fight around.}
Boss: Rhyhorn! Horn attack, quickly!
{For a while}
Boss: (Now, Bite down, Persian!)
{But all too soon-}
Purple: Rattata, Quick attack!
Boss: Scratch attack! (Your target is...)
{He saw it.}
Purple: Misse- Argh!
Boss: Missed what? Oh, by the way, about what you were holding...
Rattata: My Pokeball... shattered?! That makes...
Boss: With that gone, I wouldn't count on Rattata's loyalty. (Especially not against me. Now Rattata...)
Purple: N-no way... Hyper Fang!
Boss: (Hyper Fang it is! Now attack him, Rattata!) Persian, Bite, quickly!
Rattata: I... obey... Gio-
Purple: ... How... why...
Boss: Simply a reminder of how fragile a pokemon's loyalty is. Without the Pokeball, you were no longer its trainer, so there was no reason to obey your commands. Of course, I couldn't have a promising recruit like you die either, so...
Purple: (C-come on... I can't let him know I'm rattled.) H-heh. You know, your recruiter gave me that Rattata. Does this mean you're kicking me out already?
Boss: Ah, no. That symbolism was unintentional on my part. You're free to pick up a replacement from one of our front businesses. I've found you most suitable for my purposes. Now, for your first assignment, I want you to go east two towns over to Lavender and...
