Chapter 4: Rock Solid Obstacles

  • Report 1: Mind over Matter
    • Saffron City Pokemon Gym 1, aka "Fighting Dojo"

{Two of the martial artist trainers are fighting against each other in a training match. It wouldn't be immediately clear to an observer, but one is the Leader, with a Hitmonlee. The other is one of the Gym Trainers, with a Primeape.}

Blackbelt: Primeape's Rage is building. Even I can't control him now.

Leader: Hitmonlee, Jump Kick!

{Round X: Hitmonlee leaps at Primeape, but ends up going right over the pig monkey and towards the gym's entrance.}

{With everyone so focused on the battle, no one noticed that someone had just walked in the building, and into the line of fire.}

{However, she immediately brandishes a whip and uses it to throw the pokemon aside, the weapon moving as if it had a life of its own. Primeape, still blinded by battle-rage leaps at her as well, but suddenly recoils, holding its head after an unseeable attack.}

Leader: ...No contest, my students.

"Was this a bad time?"

Fighting Leader: I must apologize, leader Sabrina, but it was. What is this visit about?

Leader Sabrina: A very important matter, Kiyo. I've received a message for the both of us and came to deliver it. However... it hardly seems worth it, because in a few minutes, you won't have the authority to receive it.

Leader Kiyo: ...What are you saying?

Leader Sabrina: The League has changed its mind about having two gyms in the same town, which means one of us must go. We are to fight, with the loser losing his status. But to actually fight would serve little point, as we both know the outcome. So I'll give you the chance to surrender gracefully...

Leader Kiyo: No! I will back down from no challenge! Even if the Elites do favor you, I will fight!

Leader Sabrina: ...Kehkehkeh...

===Battle Start!===

  • End of report

  • Viridian Forest

{After a night of rest at the Pokemon Center, Yellow and Pikachu make another attempt at getting through the Viridian Forest. Now that Yellow knows the layout better, the wild Pokemon have less time to mount ambushes, though two Caterpie, a Metapod, and a Pidgey try.}

Yellow: We're in new territory now. Hm, there's a sign here. "Trainer Tips: No stealing of Pokemon from other trainers! Catch only wild Pokemon!"

Pikachu: Hmm...

{Yellow finds a dropped Potion here. A wild Caterpie attacks, but is quickly defeated.}

Bug Catcher: Hey, wait up! What's the hurry?

===Battle! Unidentified Bug Catcher===

{This Bug catcher has a single Lv 10 Caterpie.}

Yellow: Pikachu, Thunder Wave would be a good idea here. Then follow it up with Thundershocks.

{Caterpie doesn't let the paralysis get to it, landing two Tackles and a String Shot before going down. Pikachu grows to Lv 12 from the fight.}

Bug Catcher: I give! You're good at this!

===Battle End===

Bug Catcher: Sometimes, you can find stuff on the ground! I'm looking for the stuff I dropped!

Yellow: Is this Poke Ball yours?

Bug Catcher: ...I don't think so.

Yellow: Well, I haven't found anything you couldn't buy in any Pokemart.

{Right before the exit of the forest, another Caterpie attacks. It falls as well.}

  • Viridian Forest North Building

"Have you noticed the bushes on the roadside? They can be cut down by a special Pokemon move."

{Yellow exits to the north end of Route 2.}

Yellow: This giant molehill must be Diglett's cave. But there's a neat row of bushes and fencing blocking the way!

Pikachu: It's just as well. I don't know if we could win against any of those Digletts.

  • Pewter City

"There aren't many serious Pokemon trainers here! They're all hobbyists like Bug Catchers, but Pewter Gym's Brock is totally into it!"

{Yellow has Pikachu healed at the Pokemon Center, then decides to talk to some of the other people around.}

Jigglypuff: Puff Pu-puff puff, Jigally-yy puff puff

"Yawn! When Jigglypuff sings, Pokemon get drowsy... ...Me too... Snore..."

Pikachu: zzzz

Yellow: Pikachu, you need to wake up.

Nurse: It looks quite content asleep.

Pikachu: Chaaa.... !

{In a corner...}

Black-clothed man: What!? Team Rocket is at Mt. Moon? Huh? I'm on the phone! Scram!

Yellow: (Team Rocket? Who're they, and why do they have a name like that?)

{Yellow goes to the Pokemart to spend some of the prize money he won from fighting in the woods.}

"A shady old man got me to buy this really weird fish Pokemon! It's totally weak and it costs 500 poke!"

"Good things can happen if you raise Pokemon diligently, even the weak ones!"

{After buying a few Potions, Yellow goes to the Gym.}

Sign: Pewter City Pokemon Gym // Leader Brock // The rock Solid Pokemon Trainer!

{Inside:}

Yellow: There's a plaque on this statue. According to this, the only trainer to ever win here was Purple. ...I find that hard to believe. Did no one try the challenge while Indigo Plateau was closed?

Gym Guy: Hiya! I can tell you have what it takes to become a Pokemon champ! I'm no trainer, but I can tell you how to win! Let me take you to the top!

Yellow: Go for it!

Gym Guy: All right! Let's get happening! It will be tough for your Pikachu at this Gym! Electric attacks are harmless to Brock's Ground- type Pokemon.

Yellow: ...This could be trouble! But Purple managed to win with normal and flying attacks... Maybe if I can figure out how...

Jr. Trainer: Stop right there, kid! You're still light years from facing Brock!

Yellow: Do you even know what that means?

===Battle Start! Vs Unidentified Gym Boyscout!===

Yellow: It's one against two. Pikachu, Get ready! (Lv 12)

Jr. Trainer: Go Diglett! (Lv 9)

Pikachu: Strange. Diglett that weak don't exist in the wild. And it's not even Rock type!

===Battle end===

Jr. Trainer: You're pretty hot, but not as hot as Brock!

Yellow: That took a while. It looks like some of our opponents have strong physical defense, so... That's it, Purple must have used Leer and Tail whip to turn the tide! Well, we can do that too. but first, we need to be in top shape!

Pikachu: Right!

{One trip to the Pokemon Center later...}

Brock: I'm Brock! I'm Pewter's Gym Leader! I believe in rock hard defense and determination! That's why my Pokemon are all the Rock Type! Do you still want to challenge me?

{Round 38: ...}

{HP 2/34 vs 0%}

[Onix is autorecalled}

Pikachu: I... we won...

Yellow: Thank you, Pikachu.

Brock: Because you clearly had no good options for fighting me, I took you for granted. But you managed to make the best of things and win anyway. As proof of your victory, here's the Boulderbadge!

{Recieved the Boulderbadge}

Brock: That's an official Pokemon League Badge! It's bearers Pokemon become more powerful! The technique Flash can now be used anytime!

===Battle End===

Brock: Wait! Take this with you!

Yellow: What's this thing?

Brock: It's TM 34. A Technical Machine contains a technique that can be taught to Pokemon! A TM is good only once! So when you use one to teach a move, pick the Pokemon carefully. TM 34 contains Bide. Your Pokemon will absorb damage in battle then pay it back double! And just about any Pokemon can learn it.

Yellow: So that was how the move worked... (If you know the trick, it's useless against you. If you don't, then it's all a matter of chance... It really isn't useful at all then!)

Brock: There are all kinds of trainers in the world! Some raise Pokemon for fights. Some see them as pets. I'm in training to become a Pokemon breeder. If you take your Pokemon Training seriously, go visit the Gym in Cerelean and test your abilities!

Gym Guy: Just as I thought! you're Pokemon champ Material!

Pikachu: Pika-pika chuu! We really did it! ah... dizzy...

Yellow: Being a one mon party is tough at times like this, isn't it? We'd better get to the Pokemon center.

{Yellow has Pikachu healed, then buys some Parlyz Heals and Awakenings at the Pokemart. He leaves 500 in his wallet for some reason...}

  • Route 3

{Yellow goes east of Pewter towards Mt. Moon. for some reason, he avoids every trainer he can.}

Bug Catcher: Hey, I met you in Viridian Forest! (Lv 10 Caterpie, Lv 10 Weedle, Lv 10 Caterpie)

{Pikachu grows to Level 14.}

Bug Catcher: You beat me again! There are other kinds of pokemon than those found in the forest!

Youngster: Hi! I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear! (Lv 11 Ratatta, Lv 11 Ekans)

Youngster: I don't believe it! ...Are you storing your Pokemon on PC? Each box can hold 20 Pokemon!

Pikachu: In a contraption?

Bug Catcher: Are you a trainer? Let's fight! (lv 9 Weedle, Lv 9 Kakuna, Lv 9 Caterpie, Lv 9 Metapod)

Pikachu: Ah! A new ability... I can create illusory copies of myself to blur my outline. They're too transparent to be much use, but If I spend some time reinforcing them...

{Pikachu grows to Level 15 and learns Double team over Tail Whip}

Bug Catcher: If I had new Pokemon, I would've won!

Bug Catcher: You can fight my new Pokemon! (Lv 11 Caterpie, Lv 11 Metapod)

Bug Catcher: Done like dinner! Trained Pokemon are stronger than the wild ones!

Pikachu: It looks like that's true. It's thanks to Yellow I've become this strong! {Jumping for joy}

{The two of them find a Pokemon Center constructed just outside the Mt. Moon cave entrance.}

Suspicious man: Hello there! Have I got a deal just for you! I'll let you have a swell Magikarp for just 500 poke!

Pikachu: What?

Suspicious Man: What do you say?

Yellow: I say yes.

Pikachu: What?!

Yellow: (Whispering to Pikachu) I know I said I'd see how far we could get without catching Pokemon with Pokeballs. Well we didn't catch this one, and after all that trouble we've had with Stat-altering moves, It looks like we really need another party member to lighten the load on you.

Pikachu: But...

Yellow: How about we introduce ourselves? Go Magikarp!

Magikarp: ...I will touch the sky some day!

Pikachu: ...Um...

Yellow: ...Yeah. Pretty much what I expected.

That fight for the Boulder Badge was just EPIC. Probably the toughest fight in the game given your self-imposed challenge.
