Elendia V: So Long, My Love

Well, Im certainly quite bored, so let's get that victory lap out of the way, shall we?

My first stop is Chappi's place, because if you'll remember he was making something reasonably awesome for us. He's finished, and it's the best thing he's ever made: Silvia, the ultimate spear.

I'm just going to reiterate what this thing required, because I feel it needs emphasizing. I had to:

  • catch some crystal-detecting butterflies in chapter 2,
  • release them once I got back to Elendia,
  • wait a chapter to get the Diamond Teardrop they found,
  • and finally give it to Chappi and wait a chapter

Furthermore, I could've messed it up by not having any spears at the end of chapter 4.

Anyway, the important part is that it's mine now. Of course, we just dealt with the villains, so it's not like I'm going to need it, but whatever.

I then head to the Crystal Caverns, where there are two things to get (and Claude is raving about how he's translated the "Magic Compendium" and thus magic will become commonplace, in which case they'll need a new name for it because it isn't magical anymore). Soala is the first person I actually have to talk to to get something, and like the Silvia quest, it's easy to mess this one up: I give her the Venoma Bud, the Light Moss, and the Magic Icicle in exchange for a Book of Kylier with 50 uses. I drop my Dragon Steak, though again we have to remember that there's nothing left to kill with the book. I then talk to NaNa, who wants me to help sweep the floor. After demonstrating my awesome sweeping skills to her by way of a rhythm minigame, I get to keep the Witch Broom, a rather useless item that Cierra can master. I drop my Rosier to make room for it.

My next stop is Undine Spring. Remember that bit of examinable ground I mentioned way back in the first Elendia update? Now's the time to examine it. This allows me to dig, granting me absolutely nothing. Except the game will let me keep digging, so there must be something, right? Sure enough, after digging no less than five times in a row, we find a mystical artifact. It is called Fanelia, and its power...is a secret. It'll be of more use than the Night Scythe, I'll tell you that much (or at least it would be if we hadn't crushed everything there is to crush).

I also learn why LuLu was such a jerk to Ein before. She was attacked by some sort of animal when she was young, but nobody tried to save her. As such, she developed a dislike of other people. It's not much, but it's certainly much more backstory than any of the other Elendians ever get, and so it's worth mentioning.

Anyway, nobody else had anything interesting to say, so it's time to head to Graham's place and report our success in slaying the Accursed. Needless to say, he's quite pleased to learn of this. He then tells Ein to get some rest, because he honestly deserves it as of now.

However, as Ein rests...

Psyche! You didn't really think that was the end of the game, did you? I mean, the actual antagonists didn't even do anything of note! Anyway, Ursula appears before Ein in a dream, warning him of an imminent disaster. A Grim Angel has approached Yggdrasil, and seeks to destroy the Aquariums.

Now, I know it sounds supremely stupid, but the Aquariums are actually used to defend Yggdrasil, so this is a serious problem. Destroying them would allow the Sealed One to enter the domain of Yggdrasil, thereby leading to the Retribution. Naturally, Ursula wants Ein to deal with the problem.

Now, the only person who knows anything about Yggdrasil is Graham, so we need to talk to him. I am required to manually return to Graham's house to do this, which is only a minor annoyance compared to some of the stuff this game's put me through. At any rate, Graham explains that the domain of Yggdrasil is found within the World Tree, something anybody who knows anything about Norse mythology could've guessed. Seriously, by now so many JRPGs have called their World Trees Yggdrasil that there's no excuse for having to explain it. At any rate, we're off to Yggdrasil to confront Ledah.

Ein and his companions journey to the holy domain of Yggdrasil, and in an effort to stop Ledah, the party steps inside the tree of light.

While Ledah aims to actuate the Retribution, Ein struggles desperately to prevent it...

The two angels continue to walk their own paths, although they seem to diverge even further...

Meanwhile, in Yggdrasil, the fairies are quite worried about the fact that Ledah is in their base, destroying their Aquariums. Ursula then reveals the measures she has taken to stop him: she has released "the ones that destroy all". They're called the Cefiro, and they're supposedly dangerous. I'll say what I have to say about them later.

Next time, we'll get started on Chapter 6: The Promised Land. Unfortunately, it's all downhill from here.
