Stuck Between Heaven and Hell

So last time, Ganondorf got a fancy suit, a nice big morning star, and a fancy necklace that makes Mak like him more. What's next? Why identifying this wand we found laying about of course! After we summon a smoke demon, though. See that smug guy with a heart by his head? That heart means he's allied with us, and being a medium level demon, he will cream that ogre and skeleton without trying.

So what does a smoke demon do? Well, in addition to acting like smoke, he hits like freight train, smites, and throws sticky flames (flames that stick to stuff it hits and continues to burn it afterward). We will eventually meet this guy as an enemy, but for now, sit back and enjoy the fire works.

You smoke demon hits the ogre. x3

Yeah, three times before the ogre could even react. It's pretty much over. Potion identifying time:

You feel very buoyant.

This is a potion of levitation. It allows you to float for a while before wearing off, though you can't reach items on the ground at this time, though you can float over lava and water.

Okay, so this is the orc wizard. Like the orc priest, he's not a complete push over and has ranged attacks, but he can't fire through orcs, so you don't need to take immediate cover, however, he can have spells like "Invisibility" or "Throw flame" so be ready for a variety of tricks. Beyond that? Just hit him hard, he's a wizard and can't take hits after all.

Anyway, onto to identifying that wand, it's a wand of magic darts. It shoots magic darts and is only useful in the early game. I keep it on hand just in case anyway.

Okay, so have I introduced you to the snake yet? I'm not sure, but anyway, it's basically the small snake, but slightly faster, poisons more often, and takes more of a beating. Quite a pain early on but easy now. And that giant mite zombie? Zombies and skeletons are undead enemies and will be like their living counterpart, except weaker, slower, unable to do thinks like poison you by biting you, and are the whole, quite easy to kill.

The wave of death grows in power.

Hey, demonic mutation time. This means that the ability to regenerate by standing next to a corpse has a greater range and heals you faster. It's quite nice.

Welcome to the Ecumenical Temple. This place basically houses the majority of the altars to the various Crawl gods. To get here, you basically get deep enough in the dungeon, find a golden staircase and follow it down. In fact, all golden staircases lead to a branch of some sort, this one leading to the temple. The temple is enemy free, so you can use it as a stockpile area to drop off unnecessary junk and if you're currently atheist, grab a deity. Anyway, we'll give more of a crap about that place later when we're playing as an atheist, for now, Ganondorf is quite happy with Mak.

Also, I got a scroll of identification. An important thing to note about scrolls of identification, they sometimes work for two or three items at once per scroll, though they usually only last long enough for a single item, but it's a nice bonus when it does happen. That being said, I got a three use one and so I used it on all three of my unidentified jewellery:

t - an uncursed ring of wizardry

m - an uncursed ring of protection from fire

g - an uncursed amulet of the gourmand

Nice. so the wizardry ring allows you to cast better, though this is kind of useless for a non-caster like Ganondorf (shut up!), the protection from fire though just makes us take less damage from fire which is always a good thing when you've got nothing else on your fingers, so putting that sucker on. Gourmand amulet lets us eat as much raw meat as we want, even if our character isn't hungry, allowing you to get satiated. This is good for survival, but I like the amulet of faith more right now.

And this is where I screwed up royally. I ran into a single orc priest, figured, hey, I can beat him up, but then his buddy shows up and I start getting pounded, so I summon a demon but that demon isn't allied with me because my invocations aren't that great and so I'm kind of stuck between two fanatics and a demon. Not symbolic at all. Anyway, I've got a potion of speed and the ability to summon a second demon, I hope this works out.

Nope, I get a second summoning off but then the priest smites the crap out of me and so ends the story of Ganondorf. Well, hope that was a decent update for ya. I still hold that this game is completely fair and that a better player can survive any given situation, but sometimes that better player is not you. Regardless, it's fun and Ganondorf's final score is 818, much higher than any of my previous characters for this live blog, so meh. What to do next? (Maybe some more Amane action.)

Well, that's certainly more interesting than about 90% of the deaths I've experienced in Roguelikes. Though I wonder what would've happened if the second demon had been hostile...

At any rate, I'd like to see how the various types of magic work. Or possibly something Xom-related (assuming you were looking for suggestions, that is).

I've got a later update about Xom (though it's relatively skimpy on details about him). I might do an entire update just teaching the wide variety of ways Xom makes you hate him. As for magic? I've got some necromancy and summoning on the queue of updates and thinking about doing some transmutations next.
