episode 20: the days until the athletic festival!

Until further notice — only a few strips away — the pages are glossy and in color. The "whitespace" is yellow, the "episode 20" part is a darkish shade of pink, and the episode title and strip titles are some shade of blue.

The episode image is of Kagami in the winter uniform, running determinedly with her ribbons out of her hair and in her hands.

reading a book

Because it's autumn, a time for reading, Konata is getting "all sorts" of books, which Kagami thinks is unlike her. Konata realizes that it's for her to gain knowledge, but is concerned about the expense. Kagami points out the existence of libraries, but Konata doesn't think they'd stock up on manga. (I've seen manga in the local library, but nothing I didn't have or was interested in.) Kagami realizes that this is what she meant by "reading books".

haircut

Konata considers cutting her hair for the athletic festival. Tsukasa is surprised, as she'd been growing it out all that time. Kagami says she just mentioned the idea. Konata derives from her reaction that it has something to do with a guy. Kagami tells her not to relate everything to that, and tells Tsukasa she doesn't need to say anything she doesn't need to say.

characteristics

Konata imagines what Kagami would look like if she did cut her hair. After a bit of staring, she comes to the conclusion that "it leaves a very faint impression". Kagami sarcastically apologizes for having a boring face. She also says she's not going to do it.

energetic despite not being autumn

Konata considers the athletic festival such a chore. Kagami doesn't think that's something a young person says. Tsukasa points out that at least Konata is athletic, but as for herself, she fears she's going to be a burden. She asks Kagami what she's going to participate in, and guesses the relay. Konata answers that it'll probably be the bread-eating race. Kagami wonders if she's trying to pick a fight.

drag it along

Kagami asks Tsukasa's question, but Kagami looks away. Konata takes this to mean she was right. Kagami finds this irritating.

all sorts of autumn

Kagami says she's been training on her own. Konata wonders if she's really doing it for the festival, or for the real thing that happens afterwards. Kagami doesn't know what she's talking about. Konata asks if Kagami wants her to actually say it. Kagami is irritated again.

special body

Kagami has apparently learned that Miyuki is running in the relay. Konata relates that she was going to run in the obstacle course, and was looking forward to it, until Konata pointed out that her physique would make getting by the obstacles difficult, and laughter ensued. She was moved to the relay. Kagami points out that what she said was something like what a middle-aged man would say for sexual harrassment.

(And here's your further notice. Starting with next strip, the pages return to non-glossy grayscale.)

falling memories (only yesterday)

The athletic festivals remind her of a time when she was picked as the target item in a scavenger hunt race, but she never learned what the paper said, and she wonders. The Hiiragi twins think there are so many things it could be...

example of an answer

Konata decides to ask Miyuki. Kagami doesn't think that's the sort of thing she would be able to correctly answer. Miyuki, after reiterating the question, guesses "someone with a mole on her face", as some people are concerned about that kind of thing. The Hiiragi twins notice that she's good at dodging difficult questions, but don't think that was it.

don't think about the future

Miyuki regards the athletic festival as fun, but reminds them of the exams afterwards. Tsukasa finds the lack of things to do after the athletic festival is over to be a bit lonely. Miyuki brings up midterms, proficiency, and finals. Konata says that the second trimester is full of events, so they use up their energy on the culture and athletic festivals. Miyuki finds the midterm especially difficult. Kagami suggests the two stop averting their eyes from reality.

starting, in all sorts of ways

At home, Yui has just learned that it's almost time for the athletic festival. She relates that she used to think that the starting pistol was a real pistol until junior high. That point was the first time she looked up to a police officer. Konata thinks those are completely unrelated.
