episode 19: preparations for the culture festival!

The episode image is Miyuki in a seifuku, smiling with her hands folded in front of her upper chest.

typhoon ikka (=has gone)

Kagami notices that it's hot after typhoons. Konata says that there were a lot of them because it was a typhoon ikka (interpreting "ikka" as "family", but really, it's the fine weather after a typhoon goes away). Kagami*

says that was a good one. After a little while, Konata asks what was "good". Kagami thought Konata was making a joke, and is now wondering if Konata really thought they meant "family" in that context...

harmless to people

After school, Miyuki rolls a door open to find Kuroi and Konata talking, and asks what about. Kuroi tells her it's about how the baseball broadcasts at night tick them off. Miyuki thought she was a fan of pro ball. Kuroi specifies that she's a fan of Lotte, and points out that the Pacific League only broadcasts in timeslots harmless to most people.

half-baked

Miyuki thought she was also a fan of the Hanshin Tigers, which is true. No matter what she says, she watches the evening broadcasts, as well, unlike Konata. Kuroi isn't upset about extensions in and of themselves, but how they do it. She feels that if they're going to extend the broadcast, it should be until the game is over; if they have an extension, but end the broadcast before you know who won, they might as well have just shown the normal programming instead, and not bumped or canceled anything in its wake.

want to stand out, but not diligent

Miyuki says it's almost time for the culture festival, and hopes they have lots of good ideas during homeroom. Kuroi asks what the staple theories are, and wonders if it's a café or something. Konata points out that she does that at work, and doesn't want to do the same thing at school. Kuroi thinks it's normally when people who do things for a living get into it.

lover of festivals

Kuroi points out that in manga, they decorate with plush toys and wear costumes to turn it into a different sort of atmosphere. Konata points out that the costume aspect it part of her job, as well, since it's a cosplay café, and it would therefore be a pain to her. Kuroi grips her cheeks and yells at her for vetoing stuff, and wants her to come up with something. Also, she hadn't heard about the cosplay aspect. Konata wants to decide in homeroom.

culture

Konata sets to thinking, anyway, and says they usually have lots of snack stands or cafés. Miyuki says they sometimes have takoyaki shops. Kuroi thinks it would be tastier if they had beer, although she knows it wouldn't be possible, and she wouldn't be able to drink any while there even if it were available. Konata wonders what the "culture" in culture festival is. Miyuki jokes that perhaps, at least the "food culture" is involved, but Kuroi and Konata figure she hit the nail on the head.

right girl in the right place

Konata asks Kuroi what she remembers of booths when she was a student. Kuroi replies that there were many food-related ones, but also costume rental and planetariums. Her class did horror houses albeit a cheap version. Konata figures she's perfect for that, since she's scary. Kuroi breathes on her fist and asks Konata to clench her teeth for a few moments.

reality

Konata has a Cranial Eruption now. Kuroi asks Miyuki what she did in junior high. Turns out her junior high had never had them until her final year of junior high. Every class of every grade was in charge of a particular culture to research, and the festival was where they'd display their findings.

The cultures appear to be periods:

Konata thinks it sounds boring. Kuroi knows how she feels, but somehow thinks that's how it should be... even though it sounds really serious.

question time

The Hiiragis are on their way home. Tsukasa wants to ask if Konata said something strange that morning, as she didn't see anything wrong. Kagami wonders how they can watch the news together and Tsukasa still be on the same level as Konata.

entire family together

At home, Konata tells Yui about their typhoon conversation. She had thought that they were thinking of every typhoon that comes in a particular year to be part of a family, so they say "typhoon ikka" when they're all over (speaking of ambiguity, in English, that phrase could mean "everywhere" or "completely finished"), but what she heard seems to suggest that's not the right idea. Yui thinks it means when multiple typhoons come at once. Konata wonders if she can really believe her on that.

manual to charge forward in romance

Konata switches topics, and asks Yui what her culture festival booths were like. Yui remembers wanting to get closer to Kiyotaka (if you'll recall, they ended up marrying), so she aggressively went to his side to help him. They did a mystery-solving labyrinth. Konata didn't know they were classmates. Yui says they were in different classes, so she doesn't remember what her own class did. Konata doesn't think that's any good. (Well, it's an idea, anyway...)

getting past sleepiness

Switching topics again, Yui is having trouble staying awake while on patrol. Konata recalls that Kuroi listens to anime songs so that she'll be too afraid of that being discovered during the investigation of a hypothetical accident to fall asleep at the wheel. Yui passes on the idea, as she has co-workers in her car.

malfunction

The subject of the culture festival gets around to the Hiiragi twins. Konata asks Kagami what their class is going to do. Kagami thinks it's going to be a café. After some thought, Konata asks if Kagami will be in the kitchen, or serving. Kagami takes it that Konata is implying she's not suited to either task.

embarrassing

Konata finds one's parents showing up at a culture festival to be embarrassing. Apparently, the Hiiragi twins' family doesn't show up. Kagami tells Konata that her father thinks of his daughter a lot, though by that, she's not saying that their dad doesn't. Konata says him coming isn't particularly for her sake, but he said that he was sad he couldn't come more often, leading them to wonder what she meant by getting embarrassed when he comes to school...

detecting danger

Tsukasa had heard that Miyuki and Konata were talking with the teachers (plural? I think this was a mistranslation, stemming from the fact that Japanese apparently has no normal means outside of actually stating a number of indicating a plural, so a given noun could just as easily be either) about culture festival ideas. Miyuki wonders if they'll have good ideas during homeroom. Tsukasa says everyone leaves it up to the others to decide. Miyuki would like to suggest researching the roots of the culture festival, and displaying characteristics of various festivals by generations. Konata now has extra impetus to come up with something, even a café, just so they won't have to do that.
