Chapter V: I Elude My Watchdog and Chapter VI: A Fight That Won Friends

As the story progresses, he does take asides to talk about the pitilessness and savagery of the Martians, as well as facts that he presumably learned later in life.

  • For example, Martians are long lived; at a thousand, they take a mysterious pilgrimage from which none return. About twenty in one thousand make the trip; the rest die violently, usually by three hundred. They practice The Spartan Way on their children from the time they are hatched.

He is given bland, milky liquid and lumps of food. His caretaker, a female by the name of Sola, seems to be the only nice Martian.

The ugly ten legged beast is a guard dog. Apparently they're quite smart, and as he discovered when he tried walking out of the city, very fast. Other than that, this one has been tasked with protecting him, as we see when it charges two yeti that attak John.

Ten foot tall hexapodal white apes, unfortunately similarly muscled as John. As the lead is distracted into dropping his cudgel by being chewed on, John kills the other with a quick club to the head.

The other Yeti seems to be getting the better of the dog, and John is about to flee. He can't. The horrible ten legged dog is giving him puppy eyes, as he's being strangled. John charges the yeti, giving him the old one two before smashing its head in with the club.

When the other Martians show up, they are impressed by his feat. Constant bravery and physical prowess are the only virtues of an otherwise cruel race.

  • They're impressed enough to not euthanize his new dog.
