1* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Zorba! Is he a well-meaning if somewhat irresponsible fellow who lives in the present or a selfish con man who calls for living life to the fullest with no thought to the consequences as long as it is at the expense of others? The latter can be found in his conning the monks out of the forest by faking a miracle, spending all of Basil's money on women and booze, and encouraging Basil to pursue the widow despite knowing how tense the situation in the village was.
2* NewerThanTheyThink: The ''Sirtaki'' music piece/dance isn't a traditional old UsefulNotes/{{Gree|ce}}k music piece/dance, it was created by Mikis Theodorakis for this film in TheSixties. That hasn't stopped it from becoming iconic and strongly associated with the country.
3* SignatureScene: The dance scene at the end.
4* TheWoobie: The widow. She has her throat cut for the crime of someone committing suicide over her. Her body is abandoned on the street and the crime never prosecuted. The villagers still hate her. Only Basil, Zorba, and Mimithos (Sotiris Moustakas) the village idiot, mourn for her.
