* AdaptationDisplacement: The Anime adaptation is more well known than the children's book it was based on.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The backgrounds and character animation are ''gorgeous''. The fight scenes are incredibly well choreographed.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The orchestral soundtrack is fantastic and really emphasises the sheer ''majesty'' of the dinosaur age.
* CultClassic: The movies and TV anime of the same name have gained a small but passionate cult following in the West as of the late 2010s.
* SoOkayItsAverage: While the second movie still has its fans and captures story elements from the books to otherwise decent effect with a likeable cast, is animation-wise very unremarkable compared to the first movie’s [[SugarWiki/AwesomeArt stunning animation]], [[AbortedArc it leaves Heart’s story arc about his father in the first movie hanging]] and reduces Heart and Umasou to a very brief cameo.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: The first movie's ending was vague/ambiguous enough for it to have a sequel that takes place immediately where it ends to give fans a movie where we could've seen more of the original cast and where Heart could learn that Baku [[spoiler: is his father]]. Instead, we got a sequel that takes place years after the original with Heart and Umasou only making a brief cameo in the movie, and many fans of the original consider it to be InNameOnly or entirely different than the first movie.
* ViewerSpeciesConfusion: The purple carnivore attempting to eat Umasou is supposed to be the ''Chilantaisaurus'' from the book. Some viewers think it's a ''Carnotaurus'' due to its horns.
* TheWoobie: Heart gets this ''big time''. Throughout the poor dinosaur’s life, he’s treated as an outcast and was ''nearly killed'' as a defenceless baby by the Maiasaura leader and been forced to be abandoned only for the mother to accept/love him anyway (while she too was rejected by her herd). Later on in his life, he runs away from home out of fear of eating his family. He spends the majority of the film filled of anxiety and low-self esteem/self-worth and was nearly killed by [[spoiler:his own father]] in a dual to save his family. He later ends up [[spoiler:choosing to leave his family for their own safety (his only companion is his herbivore son, Umasou)]]. The poor T-Rex deserves a hug!
