* CultClassic: The film has been widely eclipsed by other Disney fare in the decades since its release and many people have never heard of it, but the DarkerAndEdgier Great Depression setting, traditionally Disney heartfelt moments, and strong acting, script, stunt work, and cinematography cause many people to praise the film as a unique part of the Disney library that no remake could improve on.
* JerkassWoobie: The gang of delinquents whom Natty briefly falls in with are all struggling to survive during the Great Depression when they have even fewer resources and opportunities than most people and lack the optimism Natty's upcoming family reunion gives her, as they indicate that they had pretty troubled home lives before being orphaned or running away. That being said, they are also unrepentant thieves who abandon Natty while fleeing from a policeman.
* OneSceneWonder: Twinky, TheCutie at the reform school Natty is sent to, and MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold blacksmith Charlie are both gone from the film within five or ten minutes of first appearing but make powerful impacts on the viewers.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Wolf is portrayed by Creator/{{Jed}}, the same wolfdog that portrayed ''Literature/WhiteFang'' in both Disney films. He's also the very same animal that portrayed the infected husky in ''[[Film/TheThing1982 John Carpenter's The Thing]]''.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: There are heartfelt themes and character relationships, but the movie is rougher than most Disney fare, featuring a dogfight to the death, an AttemptedRape, and the teenaged protagonist smoking in one scene and saying "Shit" in another.
