* AngstWhatAngst:
** Mannix really doesn't seem all that angry when Warren provokes Smithers into a fatal shootout despite having been nothing but contemptuous of the former and worshipful towards the latter in his previous interactions with them. He and Warren end up best buds, and Mannix even steals Smithers's coat for his own use.
** Smithers breaks his "no talk to niggers" rule rather quickly when Warren addresses him directly again, especially that, for someone so bitter about the Yankees winning the war, sharing a battlefield (on opposite sides, no less) shouldn't be enough for him to snap out of it. Smithers is considerably pleasant to Warren before the conversations turns to Smithers' son. [[spoiler:Justified in that Jody expressly told him not to speak to anyone unless asked to, so him accepting Warren's invitation could be him being eager to do anything but just sit around and wait for Jody and his gang to do their thing.]]
%%* AssPull: [[spoiler:TheReveal that about half of the people in the cabin are all in on a plot to free Daisy (and that their leader has been hiding under the floor the whole time) casts the entire plot, and several of the characters, in a different light, not necessarily for the better.]] However, some of this is foreshadowed by things such as [[spoiler:the chess game with a missing opponent, the jelly bean dropped on the floor, and the broken lock]]. Naturally, this creates an excellent RewatchBonus.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation:
** How much of Warren's story about Smithers' son is true? Your interpretation of that will likely decide your judgement of the character.
** Another one dependent on whether or not you believe Warren; was Minnie actually prejudiced against Mexicans? It's something he claims about her to Bob, yet it's unsupported by the flashback, wherein she has no objections with Bob coming in with the others and doesn't say anything even when he speaks within earshot of her (with his Spanish accent). [[spoiler:Perhaps Warren claiming this about Minnie is a bluff against Bob, who, if he really did work for Minnie, would know it wasn't true. But since Bob never knew Minnie, he can't refute this claim, proving he's lying.]]
* AwardSnub:
** Some believe Creator/WaltonGoggins deserved to make the Best Supporting Actor lineup at that year's UsefulNotes/{{Academy Award}}s for his scene-stealing work, with many noting that Mannix was the only character whose loyalty they questioned from beginning to end.
** Others have similarly said Creator/SamuelLJackson should've gotten a nomination for Best Actor.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: What else did you expect from Music/EnnioMorricone's first original Western soundtrack in ''decades''? A Golden Globe and an Oscar, that's what.
* BrokenBase: Whether or not the treatment of Daisy is misogynistic. Defenders have noted Creator/QuentinTarantino's films are extremely violent and that a woman enduring that much abuse is fine, given the treatment of his other characters. Those who believe it's sexist, though, have noted just how extreme and enduring her injuries are and that the film seems to especially revel in her abuse. Then there's the matter of whether or not her deplorable nature makes it okay, or if her crimes are kept too offscreen for it to feel deserved.
* CrazyIsCool: Daisy is clearly not quite right in the head, and that's what makes her so dangerous. And so very much fun to watch.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: Warren's entire monologue to Smithers [[spoiler: regarding the fate of his son]]. If it had been told normally, it'd have been absolutely disgusting, but Sam Jackson's over-the-top, hamtastic delivery, euphemisms, and magnificent EvilLaugh (complete with a Wrestling/RicFlair worthy "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the end) make it play jump rope with the line.
* DesignatedHero: To the point where it's a bit hard to tell if Warren's even supposed to have the audience on his side, as he has little in the way of redeeming qualities, and depending on how much of what he says regarding [[spoiler: Smithers' son]] is true, he might even be the worst person of the group.
* DracoInLeatherPants: A lot of people give Daisy the status of victim since we don't know how she got that bounty [[spoiler:to the point where they forget that Warren explains that being part of her brother's murderous gang is why her bounty is as high as it is, and she antagonizes as much as she gets beat up]].
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** O.B. the TokenGoodTeammate stage driver.
** While one of the least characterized of the eight, Mobray the hangman has a certain charm to him, [[spoiler:even after his true identity is revealed, due to being the most AffablyEvil of the bunch.]]
** Six-Horse Judy the GenkiGirl stage driver.
* GeniusBonus: At one point, Oswaldo Mobray suggests the interior of Minnie's be divided up in order to alleviate tensions, and the fireplace is chosen to represent the spirit of Georgia. History buffs will get a laugh out of that one, remembering that Georgia was infamously almost burned to the ground by General Sherman.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Literally. The film made nearly two-thirds of its $156 million haul overseas (mostly in Europe), an above-average proportion for any movie and especially a Creator/QuentinTarantino film, with its biggest foreign market being Germany, where it earned $14 million. [[https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/18/world/europe/germanys-fascination-with-american-old-west-native-american-scalps-human-remains.html This could be put down to Germany's love of Western films.]]
* MoralEventHorizon:
** [[spoiler:Jody's gang crosses it when they callously murder Minnie, her staff, and the stagecoach drivers without batting an eye.]]
** [[spoiler:Warren, with his story about raping and killing Smithers' son.]] Assuming, of course, that [[UnreliableNarrator you believe him.]]
* {{Narm}}:
** The slow-motion dialogue. "Youuuuuu gonnnnnnnaaaa maaaakeeee aaa deaaaaaaal withhh ttttttthis diaaaaaabolicallll bitchhhhhhh??????"
** And also when [[spoiler: Warren gets his balls blown off]], Creator/SamuelLJackson's laughs/screams are hilarious.
** The Japanese [[http://en.rocketnews24.com/2015/12/28/tarantinos-new-hateful-eight-gets-a-lame-japanese-promo-poster-treatment/ release poster]], which ditched the mysterious tone of the minimalist originals in favor of highlighting the movie's authorship via prominent display of Tarantino's ProductionPosse. Japanese netizens saw it as a lame move, declaring the poster to look like a "cosplay Christmas photo."
** Creator/QuentinTarantino's CreatorCameo narration which starts off the second half. It comes completely out of nowhere, never occurs again, and spells out a situation to the audience which could've easily been shown and not told.
* RootingForTheEmpire: With a cabin full of murderers, racists, war criminals, people who beat their prisoners, and characters who claim to have tortured and raped the people who came to kill them, some viewers just want Daisy to turn the tables on these perverted lawmen. [[spoiler:A shame she never really does, even if they do all end up dying anyway, and it turns out that she was working with some of them all along.]]
* SlowPacedBeginning: It's a good half-hour before we see the haberdashery, another half-hour to get settled in before John Ruth voices his suspicions about the company there, and ''another'' half-hour before [[spoiler:the coffee gets poisoned]].
* SpecialEffectsFailure: When Warren shoots [[spoiler:Bob]], the squibs go off in the wrong order; blood comes from his shoulder when he's shot in the stomach and vice versa.
* SpiritualSuccessor: To ''Film/{{The Thing|1982}}''. The story is about characters isolated in the snow, with heavy shared themes of paranoia and a bleak tone. Both feature Creator/KurtRussell as the lead and a soundtrack by Music/EnnioMorricone. Three songs from ''The Thing''[='s=] soundtrack even show up in ''The Hateful Eight'' (two unused in the film but featured on the soundtrack, and one used when they find the site of the UFO). [[spoiler:Both films also end with the two main characters, one black and one white, calmly waiting to die.]]
** Also to Tarantino's first film, ''Film/ReservoirDogs''. Both films are a mystery about unsavory characters trapped in a building.
* TearJerker: The ending can come off as this, especially with Music/RoyOrbison's "There Won't Be Many Coming Home" playing.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** [[spoiler:Daisy starts the picture as 100 pounds of crazy in a 10-pound bag, with her sass, feral cunning, and her truly astounding ability to take a beating. And for all we're told about how dangerous she is, [[ShowDontTell we never actually see her in action]] -- not even one flashback showing her committing any crimes. She never gets a chance to truly shine, ending up just another victim, hanged by two virtually incapacitated men. Her last attempt to kill the remaining heroes by chopping off Ruth's arm was a good effort, though.]]
** [[spoiler:Since three of the eight are not who they say they are, but are in fact members of a gang, some people may feel this way if they found the people they were posing as to be more interesting than the actual criminals, particularly since we don't get to know the "real" three. Channing Tatum might also get the short straw, since he only appears in flashback — again, spending much of his scene posing as someone he is not — before his head is blown off unceremoniously.]]
* TooCoolToLive:
** Okay, he's about as much of a dick as most of the other characters in the film, but it can be hard not to mourn the loss of [[spoiler:Ruth (and his glorious 'stache). It helps that he's played by Creator/KurtRussell]].
** [[spoiler:O.B. Jackson is just about the only nice person that we see much of, and absolutely did not deserve to die the way he does..]]
* TheWoobie: [[spoiler:Six-Horse Judy is a perky and completely innocent sweetheart... who gets gunned down by Grouch while she begs for her life.]]
** JerkassWoobie: A few of the main characters have their moments. Daisy, for example, never catches a break throughout the film, and since we're never really told what she did -- the things we see being her uttering racial slurs, watching impassively while several people die, and trying to kill and manipulate a few others in fairly understandable self-defence -- the violence against her feels like DisproportionateRetribution. Whilst her brother's gang executed a number of people, Daisy did not explicitly take part in the killing spree that we know of, and her death feels unjustified to many viewers and is discussed as such in essays and reviews. [[spoiler: Although given that the $10,000 bounty is shared by the rest of the gang that she belongs to, it’s highly likely that prior to her capture, she took part in murder sprees like the one we see the rest of them commit.]]
