* ContestedSequel: Although it's generally agreed that each film in the franchise is weaker than the one before it, there's some debate over if this film is worse than its sequel, ''Film/SuddenImpact''. The points of contention are usually this film's LighterAndSofter tone compared to the rest of the series, and its {{anvilicious}} messages against affirmative action.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** The climax involves Harry and his partner storming Alcatraz. Two years later, Creator/ClintEastwood starred in ''Film/EscapeFromAlcatraz''.
** This is not the only film that involves [[Film/TheRock a terrorist takeover of Alcatraz by disgruntled American soldiers]].
** Modern viewers may wonder why Harry Callahan is teaming up with [[Series/CagneyAndLacey Mary Beth Lacey]].
* MisaimedFandom: The scene of Harry's diatribe against affirmative action has been used by reactionary elements on the internet to dismiss the issue. While privately Eastwood is certainly not a fan of affirmative action, Harry's views come across rather bigoted in the film as Kate Moore is depicted as a competent cop who TookALevelInBadass and earns Harry's respect, and later saves his life at the cost of her own.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/TyneDaly, who plays Kate Moore, would later star as a [[Series/CagneyAndLacey far more famous female cop]] on the small screen.
* TearJerker: Frank [=DiGiorgio=]'s and Kate Moore's deaths, especially the former considering he previously appeared in two installments of the films and is one of Harry's established friends.
* ValuesDissonance: The film's anti-affirmative action message can be harder to take in the 21th century, as many professions, including police, are using such programs to recruit more women.
